I don't remember this boss fight. Why was it so challenging?

It was challenging because Bowser shot Lightning rings, it would take 3 times to kill him, and on the last life he broke some of the platform.

I need to try that again... IT's been a long time since I've played this game. I've never made it this far in the DS version.
