Now this is something I can get behind. SNK is making a mini version of the Neo Geo MVS arcade cabinet called the Neo Geo Mini (https://kotaku.com/snk-announces-the-neo-geo-mini-will-play-40-games-1825908512) and comes with 40 preloaded games.
No date or price announced yet but this thing is looking mighty sweet. ;D
I have my eye on this also. I hope they market this in a way that I can walk in and grab one up. This thing will be awesome.
That's cool, although is the arcade cabinet part really necessary? Its not a dealbreaker by any means, just seems like a way to push msrp up.
Someone should be sure to mention when they set a release date or when preorders open up.
Personally I would rather they design their AVS controller as the system with the games built in and from there TV hook up. That was what I was originally hoping for. I am not sure, but I am thinking that the cabinet design might not be practical for long plays unless you are setting at the dining table.

I think the arcade cabinet parts makes it a much cooler novelty than any of the Nintendo releases. I don't expect them to use high end Sanwa parts, so I don't expect the price to be astronomical. Plus, you don't need a TV, which is always nice.
I'll keep an eye on the release date and price.
As for long plays, these devices are not meant to be for that, they're novelties. Publishers just release higher end versions on consoles which are meant for longer play sessions.

@retro junkie I like the concept idea you mentioned. Make a solid awesome controller and do it all from there.
How would multiplayer work in either case?
That does look pretty cool. Good find
@CreepinDeth !
I believe the Mini has extra ports for more controllers if you want to do multiplayer.
The extra controllers look like the Neo Geo CD controllers. But I think it is more of a USB connection.
@CreepinDeth alright... that's pretty cool then! hm... that makes it a lot better in my opinion. These games are all about the experience gaming with friends - in my opinion.
@retro junkie - I've seen some potential images so far... but not the real deal for the Neo Geo Mini.
Here's the official SNK Corp website (I keep forgetting they are no longer SNK Playmore):
The NEOGEO mini - a video game console celebrating the 40th Anniversary of SNK's brand is announced! 40 legendary NEOGEO titles will be included! - snk-corp.co.jp (https://www.snk-corp.co.jp/us/press/2018/the-neogeo-mini-a-video-game-console-celebrating-the-40th-anniversary-of-snks-brand-is-announced-40-legendary-neogeo-titles-will-be-included/)
I'm kind of torn. I'm going to want to open this to play but I also want to keep it sealed because I'm a collector. Hopefully they're not so limited so I can pick up two.

I hear what you mean. I have the Neo Geo X still... might unload it at some point... but I was torn on that same conundrum lol.
The Neo Geo X has raised in value... I'll create a topic on this at some point.
@BLUEVOODU did you get all the extra games and stuff for it?
I've bought two of the snes minis, praying for another nes mini (supposed to come out in june) and bought those archival cases for the one i didn't open. Unless this turns into an AT Games dollar store kind of thing I'll do similar for it.
@targetrasp Sorry... I think I missed this response. I had the general game set that came with it, dock, 2 controllers ( I think it was 2)... and then Last Blade was included at the time. There wasn't enough play on the system to justify buying the other games. In face, it slipped out of active play pretty quickly.
I re-visit the Neo Geo X here and there now... It would be cool to check out this Neo Geo Mini as well. Been tempted to look at it more since
@CreepinDeth posted this lol.
There's so much middle-aged man-cave bait out or almost out right now it's pitiful...
LOL.. why does it have to be middle-aged man-cave bait? Why can't it just be.... this Neo Geo Mini looks awesome. Everyone wants one.
The prices I am seeing on this thing are not very encouraging.

Yep! Exactly!
Looks like 3rd party sellers overpricing. I didn't get a chance to get one myself. To be honest, I had forgotten about it with work and life stuff going on. Maybe one day they'll be at a reasonable price, lol. :asdds:
@CreepinDeth LOL... don't old your breath on that one. Sucks that it was such a limited run that it caused prices to be that high. Sounds like they MAYBE should've made more.
As always, Neo Geo stuff out of reach. :(
@CreepinDeth @retro junkie @targetrasp my buddy sent this to me .seems it's back to being cheaper again ? Like $100ish
Neo Geo Mini - amazon.com (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07D1KN661/ref=cm_sw_r_sms_awdb_t1_BUrMBbZ2KQMKT)
Mannnnnnnnnnn, I just gave up and purchased a bunch of SNES games. Waiting at my post box everyday for them. I'm playing Star Ocean right now with English patch on a reproduction cart. >:(
No NAM 75 or Baseball Stars...
does clicking your hyperlink count or do I have to click a banner ad? This may happen tonight DESPITE missing two of my most favorite NEO games
@BLUEVOODU - I pre-ordered this morning! I was going to post this as soon as I was able to. You beat me to it. Can't wait. :)
@targetrasp I would buy from the ads at the top (click then navigate to the item). I can make it easier in future links and setup direct links for certain items.
Did the remove Nam 1975 and Baseball Stars from a prior version? Or did they just not decide to include it?
@CreepinDeth lucky lol... I'm in the same boat as
@retro junkie and have spent all my gaming monies. Star Ocean was a pretty cool game if I remember it correctly.. Cannot go wrong there.
I hope this is as cool as it looks.
@targetrasp This might work:

I Appreciate the support - Thank you. This helps with Hosting and funding future projects where I need to pay for developer assistance.
I want one of these. I'm wondering how the included controller performs. IE if the mechanisms are like the old Neo Geo arcade sticks.
Not only have I spent my gaming money, I want one of these really bad.

those are beautiful
OOOooo we need a topic on those. I like them ... I like them A LOT ;D
@BLUEVOODU Admittedly Nam 75 and Baseball Stars has never seem to be a big part of the SNK fanbases' favorites.
They're more of a nostalgic favorite of mine. in the 90's dad was part of a bowling leage and every week he went he'd give me $5 - $10 in quarters and i'd hang out in the bowling alley's arcade. I'd easily spend 4 or 5 beating Nam and the rest would be split between Simpsons, Baseball Stars, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and a bowling game with a track ball attached. I've got the baseball stars for the nes and it's great, but it's not nearly the same as on a neo geo product.
YEah.. it's definitely not the same for the Neo Geo Pocket Color. It's still fun, but not the same. I bought Baseball stars on Steam - That's pretty cool with the achievements. My favorite version of Baseball Stars might be the Neo Geo CD version. We need more Neo Geo conversation ;D
Those are good memories! I have some pretty similar.

yes you did,
@CreepinDeth lol... yes you did. I completely forgot about that. Zombies Ate my Neighbor lol - ah, such a fun game.
I'm going to bump that topic. It's so pretty. I want one ;D
After ordering a mini I found this video and was a little depressed. I'm sure it'll still be fun but parts of this thing will definately be a let down.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1VUrXJ8--8 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1VUrXJ8--8)
@targetrasp I checked this out. The video doesn't surprise me. Also, It was hard to see the SNES Classic comparison. I'm not sure it really looked better as he stated. BUT... he obviously saw a difference. Maybe it's more blurry? But...not sure.
As far as the controllers... yeah... I get that. The Neo Geo CD controllers were a lot more expensive. On top of that, those microswitches would wear out on the controllers. Customers would trade them in ... or sell them to me and other people would buy them for parts. It was VERY common to have faulty microswitches. When customers traded in ANY Neo Geo CD gamepad, they were tested 1st. With that said... I'm not sure how I feel about SNK creating controllers without microswitches. $25 is not a bad price... and I'm sure they would be $20 more at least with Microswitches.
QuoteClicky Thumbsticks is very hard to make.
True ;D AND more expensive.
I'm painfully aware of the extra expense associated with those little microswitches. I bought a mechanical keyboard for home a few years ago then had to have one at work. I couldn't get work to pay the extra 100 for one so I bought a second one.
I would absolutely pay 20 - 25 more for the microswitches, I just may not have bought 2 controllers! I don't know why I assumed i'd get clicky controllers but the realization that wasn't coming was a let down.
That does change things a little, expectations mainly. My Neo Pocket Color has click switches. My Neo Geo CD controllers have click switches. So this mini will feel like Neo Geo games on another console? Why did they go cheap on us?
And the odd button layout. It is almost like this was licensed out to a third party. :-\
I really like the fact that they included all those KOF and the amount of Metal Slugs, plus Blazing Star. It would be nice having something like this sitting up somewhere, but the mini itself is so impractical to play on. Unless you have very tiny hands. The controllers are a must have if I intend on getting one of these.
I'm starting to visualize a really cool display of miniaturized retro consoles (nes, snes, neo, psx, commodore 64,) Now if they'd do a GOOD version of the sega products on mini scale
@retro junkie I didn't realize the neo pocket even had microswitches.. were they just in the buttons?
The directional pad has clicky switches. Or it sure feels that way.
Wikipedia agrees.
I've only ever seen one and never played it, I would have loved to have tried one out.
Yeah... we need to create more Neo Geo posts... There's a lot to cover again lol ;D
The clicky switches were nice. But as I mentioned... they wore out quite a bit on the Neo Geo game pads. I'm a bit torn if they should be used anymore... EVEN THOUGH I love the clicky switches.
These are out and shipping now, correct? Anyone have any experiences of the Neo Geo Mini to Share?
I've not opened mine, contemplating getting an archival case and sealing it up.
From what I can tell the retro pi is where it's at. I'd bet I could buy a neo controller and use it there, have better resolution, and spend less than I did on international w/ 2 controllers.
Those are really cool! ugh
@retro junkie ... quit making me want new stuff lol.
@CreepinDeth How about you? What's your experience so far?
My experience so far is that it looks nice on my shelf, lol. ;D
I haven't opened it and I don't plan on it. Especially since it's not exactly blowing people away with its greatness, or lack thereof.
LOL... so leaving it sealed and reselling it later?
nope, not ever reselling anything, ever... too many regrets!
my kids can pawn the crap off when I die and pay their houses off.
Same, I'm not reselling either. Might open it sometime in the future but not anytime soon.
I'm thinking that I'll find a used one somewhere... the nes and snes classics are easy to get now, maybe the mini will flounder after the holidays or everyone who gets one for christmas opens it and realizes its not awesome and pawn it off
Ben Heck is doing a teardown of the Neo Geo Mini. Good stuff. Here is part 1, part 2 should coming out soon. I'll post it once it goes live.

"oh gee, I wonder where the screws are"
I like this guy
Oh boy! Another handheld! 8) I like his portables.
I can solder pretty well but this guy puts the kids in a Foxconn sweatshop to shame. what he does in about 30 seconds would have taken me at least 5 minutes.
Part 2 is out and for those of you who like micro switches, you'll enjoy this video.

LOL :)) that's pretty funny. This guy is pretty amazing... So... Does that mean there's a bromance going on here?
@CreepinDeth Part 2 is great as well... nice post ... keep it up ;D
bromance... maybe a mild adoration for some serious skill...
lol bromance it is
@targetrasp There is some serious skill there... but you've fixed a lot of this kind of stuff up in the past as well. You could probably do this... you and
@retro junkie seem to be pretty handy around electronics. I don't have the time right now... certification studies again... working on 2 before EOY and 8-9 (If possible) by next May. However, given the time... I'd like to do more of this stuff and wood working... and guitar playing.
you should combine woodworking and guitar playing and recreate https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i2mh7zGfFRM
@targetrasp lol... I hate to admit it... I just watched that video. Pretty frickin cool how some things just come together. That's really cool... and what's the over / under he was blasted during the entire interview? lol.
Has anyone else played their Neo Geo mini lately?
BUMP!!! ???
Reviving this topic just briefly. I was disappointed that my Turbo mini is delayed until December 31st. So I spotted an SNK Neo Geo mini International Edition for $59. Got it this week. Spent a little time with it yesterday.
My personal first impression? This is a "we are celebrating forty years" type of trophy thingy. Come "celebrate with us" sort-of memory, nostalgic piece. I understand. Not exactly a serious gaming console.
You can play it "as is" out of the box, but it is awkward and difficult. I already have plans to order a game pad controller. I think that will make it more "user friendly" and accessible. The speakers are "tiny" when it comes to audio quality. But what can you expect? This is not meant to be an actual arcade cabinet, only a small representation of the Neo Geo influence in the Arcade, a look back. I understand, no other mini has built in speakers. I will let this go. A good set of over the ear headphones does wonders. I will also order an HDMI cable so as to hook this up to my TV. I get it, that the concept, in design, has emphasis toward the fact "this is Neo Geo at the arcade." But it would have been nice if they had included, in the box, a simple HDMI cable, especially since it needs the HDMI mini cable end. What's with that? If I was rating this, that would have been a big mark against it. It is not that the built in screen is not adequate. I have no problem, I love my 3DS. Love portable gaming.
The one thing that I wanted out of this is Neo Geo games, specifically, Blazing Star. Finally obtaining something from NEO GEO that was "affordable" and it be from them. I guess I was thinking a "Neo Geo console!" I got one! (Hallelujah chorus in the background) But if you want it as a gaming console, you can make it work. And that is sad in a way. If they wanted to "me too" jump on the bandwagon, it would have been better if this had been an AES mini. That would have been reasonable and user friendly for the casual gamers. It would also have been less disappointing, is that the word I am looking for? It is not that I AM disappointed, maybe, not what I was expecting? Confused? Confused, or frustrated, in my expectations of the desire to play this collection of games and finding the mini's design being somewhat of a hinderance.
I don't mean for this to be negative at all. I love the Neo Geo mini. Some games I have never found in a collection for any console. Seeing the potential and accepting the inevitable.
Game Pad has arrived!! Makes all the difference in the world! ;)
@retro junkie How does the controller perform... say based against the old Neo Geo CD controller pad?
Good review... I decided not to buy into this. I bought the Neo Geo X and many other variants... but decided to no buy this. Do you think it's worth the purchase?
I'm surprised
@targetrasp and
@CreepinDeth haven't jumped in yet ;D
@BLUEVOODU there is a learning curve. In the Neo fighting games it is very important to know up down left right. The directional pad is, to me, the achilles heel. I don't fully understand why but the micro switches on the original gave you a sense of direction. The NGCD pad has a tighter feel, where as the mini pad is so very loose and floaty. But once your thumb learns the directions, (eye to hand coordination) it is a joy to play. I just could not play any of the fighting games on the console itself. The mini stick is such an awkward struggle. Honestly a stick is meant to be played with the ball in the palm of your hand, not between two fingers. The controller should have been a pack in. That would have made the system very user friendly. Button configuration on the mini pad is also something to get used to if you are used to the NGCD pad. But if you are used to SNK collections on various consoles over the years, it shouldn't be a problem.
The NGCD pad is on the bottom. At least the colors are right. Right at this moment mini is $49 on Amazon. Good buy for the games in this collection.
Edit:The games seem to be AES console roms, not the arcade counterpart. The reason I come to that conclusion is that you can go into a menu to choose different configurations like easy, normal, hard, etc.
That's a USB connector, right? man... this makes me want to break out my old Neo Geo CD and AES. I haven't played them in 3 years - CD.... and 1 year for AES.
Re-reviewing the screen... how well does it look on it? The Neo Geo X was a little odd at times... but still looked decent. I wonder how it compares. I've also bought a couple Neo Geo games on the switch. They look good on it... and did pretty good ports to the screen format.
@BLUEVOODU yes you are right it is USB connector. Below is my DS comparing both screens. This is the regular DS NOT THE LARGE SCREEN. Seems to be the same size. The photo does not do the screen justice. It has a bright sharp screen with rich vibrant colors. And it does not bother me other than the fact that it is shaped like an arcade cabinet. I am use to portables, my gaming platform of choice.
I am working on a full review for my blog. Not going to be complete until I get an HDMI connector. Should have been in the package in my opinion.
LOL... Zoo Keeper for the win! Nice Comparison. That screen does look decent... but it is small. The Neo Geo X... I will try to post about that screen. I need to find it... yeah... I lost it somewhere lol.
@BLUEVOODU my wife and I are into Zoo Keeper. She is a non-gamer, so yeah, if she gets interested in a game, I am onboard. It is an addicting game, totally unpredictable every time you play. ;)
@retro junkie I used to play this game ALLLLLLLL the time. It was a quick, fast, and somewhat fun filler game. I've had a lot of fun with it ;D
Maybe we need a Zoo Keeper topic.
@BLUEVOODU that DS is a Japanese DS. Only play Zoo Keeper on it. I don't know why. Just do. I need to put FF in there occasionally being that it is a FF special Edition. 8)
Lol now you're just showing off
@retro junkie that's a cool DS... nice!
