Quote from: CreepinDeth on October 01, 2025, 09:28:15 PM$100 and you don't even get the controller? How can Nintendo make bluetooth replicas of previous gen consoles but not for the Virtual Boy?

It's super neat, and I do agree it's cool, but I'm going to have to pass unless I can get one for a cheaper price. I'm also not paying $20 for cardboard.

Come on @CreepinDeth, you need to buy the $20 cardboard LOL.  ;D  For me in my current household state, I'm 100% ok not having another controller.  Just adapt the Wii controller or pro controller to this process and done.  I'd be happy with that.

Quote from: targetrasp on October 01, 2025, 10:39:06 PMI've really dialed back the spending on game nostalgia, but this is a must have for me. It'll likely get encased in acrylic and never be used but it'll look pretty on a shelf.

$100 is salty... for sure... but I'm going to get this.  For me, this is a shut up, Nintendo and take my money.

I'm sure it's a long shot and doubt it will happen.   However, I'm really hoping they make new games for the Virtual Boy.  Nintendo COULD do this... how awesome would it be if they brought out new games for it?

Quote from: Kinikko on October 05, 2025, 11:02:33 PMI feel like Microsoft in general wants to move away from console gaming.  Everything is available on PC either way right?  I feel like they're just resigning to their fate in the gaming space for PC.  Nintendo has the handheld market.  Sony has the consoles.

100% - They've blended so well with the PC market, I think they've done this to themselves.  HOWEVER, it also somewhat makes sense as they have Windows 11.  Over the last many years, they've been trying to get closer to the everything OS, they may have done just that by merging their gaming platform.

Quote from: retro junkie on October 06, 2025, 09:54:36 AMI keep seeing info that Microsoft is ending the XBOX console. I never liked a gaming market with a limited amount of choices for gaming. Competition is good. The 80's and 90's is a good example of the way I like it, everybody putting out handhelds, everybody putting out consoles. The market stayed shaken up.

100% as well - competition is good.  I've mentioned it in other threads and specifically in this gen 9 console thread.  Many industries and business segments have gone to rubber stamping and micro improvements.  Who can blame them though?  Anything unique and cool generally sells for a ridiculous amount of money.  Look at cars, long gone are unique looking cars... even higher end cars literally look the same.  Long gone are the unique consoles ... and I think that's in fear of losing.  Especially losing when swinging for the fences on a new idea.

Has Microsoft released many 1st party titles in the recent past?  You used to have Microsoft game studios, they bought Rare and others... I might be missing it, I just don't see them capitalizing on some of these ventures like they used to try.

LOL you're welcome.  I switch between both... for some reason, I've been digging light mode for awhile now.  :great:

@CreepinDeth ok -- checking in again.  Does everything seem the same?  This new theme functions a bit different.  The alerts are in the top right.  Now, they will show up there AND I believe pop-up when they happen while you're on the board, but don't pop-up when you're off board and then come to the site after they happen.

You cannot view this attachment.

There is a known bug right now in the email alerts.  They get stuck in queue and will be fixed on the next release whenever that is.  It looks like you do not have the alerts though coming through email for many.

Let me know... hopefully this has been worked out with the new theme.  If not, we can discuss and do a few tests.

@SpartanEvolved mentioned this the other day.  At least on its current versions, Costco will no longer be stocking Xbox Series S and X systems.

Link:  https://www.thegamer.com/costco-retailer-xbox-series-x-s-microsoft-gaming-no-longer-sold-confirmation/

I almost bought an Xbox Series X Halo limited edition back in... 2021 I think it was.  What I will say is, limited competition is not good.  I hope it doesn't mean that Xbox is doomed. There seem to have been more limited releases for the Xbox during this generation.  In terms of unique games, it seems there are limited number of options.

What do you think about this news?  Thoughts... comments... post it up!

Hey @Kinikko - awesome to have you back.  Stay awhile and post up!

In the new theme, you bet!  There is a dark mode to each color.  The old theme was no longer being updated... and I'm looking to starting branching out using this theme.

To engage dark mode, it's at the very top.  Just click the sun next to "Chicken Dinner Gaming Community" to turn to dark mode!

Also, maybe we could get @Jack to help and bit.

I don't think @Kinikko checks anymore... not sure if Kinikko would be able or wanting to help at this time.

lol @mastermario - I will look into it. The prior arcade just isn't supported these days. But I'll see if there are alternatives I can find. I agree, it would be an awesome feature to bring back.

@medataoh mentioned being a web programmer a long time ago and was looking to help. He hasn't been around in awhile... it would be cool to see Chris back.

@mastermario - would you like to help rebrand the old page?  I could use help with that if you are able.

If so, let's talk to plan and move it forward.

bumping this up again:
@Jack @Mai Valentine @targetrasp @CreepinDeth @mastermario @Grindspine @retro junkie  --> Would this time work for you?  I'd like to see if we could get at least 4-5 on at a time.

@Grindspine I added more items to my wishlist.  Specifically on sale right now, I'm looking at:

Whisker Squadron: Survivor
Terminal Velocity: Boosted Edition
Earthion

Too many games in my backlog to list LOL.   All 3 of those are Steam Deck Playable.  Whisker and Earthion are Verified and Terminal is playable.  I like the idea of being able to play Terminal Velocity on the Steam Deck LOL  :great:   Pretty pumped for that  :happydance:

Which games are you going for?

General Discussion / 40 years of Super Mario Bros
October 01, 2025, 08:29:11 AM
2025 marks 40 years of Super Mario Bros.   Holy crap. Where did the time go?

I don't know about many others, but I had the pleasure of playing Super Mario Bros for the 1st time in the arcade. I post up on this in the What was your 1st Arcade Experience? topic in Arcade

The following Mario website is really hammering into the 40 years of SMB:
https://mario.nintendo.com/

There also a Super Mario Galaxy movie coming April 2026 - this is in collaboration with Illumination. Im a fan of several Illumination movies.

What are your best Super Mario Bros memories and stories?

Post it up!

This is pretty cool!  I wondered if this was going to happen.

The Virtual Boy is being added to Nintendo Online for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2!  This is coming February 17, 2026.

You cannot view this attachment.

Article:  https://www.nintendo.com/us/whatsnew/games-from-the-virtual-boy-system-are-coming-soon-to-nintendo-switch-online-expansion-pack

This will be cool and will be an accessible way to enjoy Virtual Boy ... although, if you haven't tried the Virtual Boy on an actual system, you are missing a bit lol.  It was a unique experience.

However, you CAN add a Virtual Buy Accessory for $100 - yes...  a Virtual Boy Accessory which is a replica of the old Hardware!

Or you can do cardboard mode which is literal cardboard accessory that fits over your console and you view through it to your screen:

Personally, I'd want to skip cardboard mode and do the full accessory. Maybe the cardboard accessory would work well... I just don't see it translating well...?

What would be cool is if they added new games!  I'm not holding my breath for that... but how cool would that be?

I'm pumped for this.  What about you?  Thought, comments... post it up!

IT's been a long time... bumping this up.

@targetrasp --> That 3D All-Stars has sure jumped in price LOL  :great:

I ended up purchasing a few Shmups lately for the Switch --> Syder Reloaded, Shmup Collection and Raystorm x Raycrisis HD collection

I've been on a bit of a Shmup kick lately!  If you're getting on a Shmup kick, you should check those titles out.  Links were embedded to their respective topics

It looks like Final Fantasy Tactics has just been released for the Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series and playstation 5.  This game looks rather cool. It's been a LONG time since I tried the original and memories have faded a bit.  However, I remember it being an enjoyable experience back then.  This game is on my radar for the future... I am a sucker for tactics games like this.

Have you played Final Fantasy Tactics?  What are your best memories of this game?  Are you excited for the new version?  I figure @Mai Valentine, @targetrasp and @retro junkie might have something to say on this topic lol  :great:

:great:

LOL!  Feel the burn ... Did it hurt?  Honestly, it was near impossible to pick Wind Jammers.  I just remember all the fun my friends and I had playing that game.  We had a lot of fun playing the others... especially Metal Slug, but it was windjammers that seemed to get the most play.  ;D
#55
@CreepinDeth - I think that's where I am at right now.  I had a conversation with @SpartanEvolved on this the other day.  I think I'm waiting for the Steam Deck 2 as well.  There are cool alternatives as pointed out by spartan... IE the Rog Ally.   However, I think I'm going to hold out for the Steam Deck 2.  My Deck 1 is doing alright.  It would be nice to be able to capitalize on the better battery life of the OLED
#56
That's interesting.... Bust-A-Move arcade edition?  I would not have thought that.   @retro junkie you have to pick just 1 lol.

I think my most played was Samurai Shodown, Metal Slug, or maybe Windjammers.  Though I also could easily throw Fatal Fury Special in there as well!  It would be hard for me to choose between those 4.  I like each for different reasons.

SO ... I will narrow it down to Samurai Showdown OR Windjammers.  ???

And for the premise of this thread... narrow that down to...  ???

Windjammers  :great:   (it might actually be Samurai Showdown)

General Discussion / Re: Nintendo's New Patients?
September 25, 2025, 04:13:07 PM
Quote from: CreepinDeth on September 24, 2025, 11:08:21 PMOver the decades Nintendo has been humbled just as often as they have been successful.

I agree with this. Honestly... though the game has changed a bit over the years.  Nintendo (and other companies) really have gone to cookie cutter.  You don't see attempts like the Virtual Boy anymore.  And why should companies?  It's a risk.  Now, they have to have winners. Period.  This has also killed a lot of creativity... that may or may not be successful.

His call out of WOW and Everquest is spot on... and patents like this potentially will cause genre rifts or they're going to have micro differences that will be recognized by the patent office as different enough.

These days, companies are finding value where they can.  They're protecting whatever moat they can protect.  So much is transferring to logical patents because there are vast opportunities in the logical space for patents.  You're going to see this more and more. The interesting kicker is how AI may smash through a lot of these barriers.

The patents, in my opinion, are too wide and vast.  However, it seems that the patent office has decided that's not the case.  I'm curious how it will all shake out.  I feel like this was a thing a year or two ago... did this just get approved?  The video posted was from 7 days ago.

Let me add a little bit of a premise to this.  So far, this conversation is for none-retro sections.  However, This is how we (as a group) way back in 2018 (lol) determined "retro:"

Retro is currently defined as systems under 1080p... and / or systems that are emulating older systems.  For example, the Genesis mini, or any other new system that MAY have been updated for resolution on current TVs, but still fit in older retro systems.  Yes, this doesn't totally fit handhelds either... such as the 3DS.  At the time we created the board, the 3DS was still current and the same thing with the Vita

There are 2 situations that could handle this... 1, we leave the current gen as current with stake in ground as of when we started the boards.  2, we can update this and move the topics from say Nintendo to Retro for 3DS. We can do this for systems that drop out of "current gen" and at an agreed upon time.

That point wasn't really up for consideration at this time to handle naming and a few other pieces of the more current boards.  However, we can talk through that as well if we want to open it up.

1st potential solution is just update the Nintendo board to state Nintendo only.  All systems to cover would be in the description, and we just continue on as is.  This would solving potential naming issues cleaning up for  search engine optimization of titles.  Then repeat for the other titles.

2nd solution would be to break down the Nintendo section (for example) to sub boards:
Switch and Switch 2 (or switch and switch 2 separately, IMO that's harder because they're so similar), Wii U, and 3DS.  Sony could be renamed to Sony and sub boards of Playstation 3, 4, 5, and Vita.  However, we are in the same conundrum of 3/4/5 being so close.

I'm leaning on the rename right now to clean up links a bit for the pretty links.  However, I'm also thinking things through for the future of the forums.  I've been working on the next step and getting us out there more with better SEO...etc... and trying to get more traffic flowing.  You've most likely experienced that more since last December.  I made a ton more updates and changes since July... and we have been seeing some results... but those changes need to bake in and adjustments made.

The overall idea is to get more people here and staying.

It appears they are launching Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 single pack for Nintendo Switch.  Both games are included.   This is a pretty cool package, however, the price is going to be $70.

If you already have the Super Mario 3D All-Stars for the Nintendo Switch, then you already have Super Mario Galaxy on the Switch. The Super Mario 3D All-Stars is going to run you a lot of money these days, so if you do not have it, the Super Mario Galaxy 1 an 2 collection will be the best way to go.

It's cool they're releasing this... and they know people are going to pay.  I'm going to hold off, but I'm sure enough people are going to tell Nintendo to shut up and take their money lol  ???   ;D   I'm also wondering if this will become a rare gem... somewhat like Super Mario 3D All-Stars at this time.

This game comes out on October 2nd... here is our Amazon affiliate link:
