Retro Gaming and Hardware / Re: Mario Party - DS
June 08, 2020, 11:29:47 PM
That's so strange you mentioned Mario Party DS, I just bought a ds / 3ds collection last Saturday and it was one of the games I'm going to keep. I've yet to play it but your review just helped move it up the list.

You dig it because of that sequence where he cuts a flippin tree down with his sword...

I gotta go with his rival Ukyo - blue looks sweet on those

I'm down, now we just have to find a cat hearder to get is all together...

I think Picard is great. Stewart is elderly and has lost a step but I like seeing what happened to JLP after his tenure on the Enterprise. Outside of the titular character, Picard doesn't feel recycled. Retro's sentiment is accurate in that Picard is heavily reliant on nostalgia, especially in getting viewers invested into the main character, Picard as a show is shot different, told different, and not that cheesy soap opera that Star Trek continually leans toward. I like the dark element (although I don't find it all that dark) and the fact it somehow manages to keep the heart that embodies Star Trek. While the review sites put it somewhere in the high 70% low 80's, critically 90% of the viewers like it. It's not a masterpiece but it's a great story with room to grow, as long as Stewart can keep going.

I put together a retro pie a few raspberries ago just to play around and it was pretty cool. It was a bit touchy at times and i was more annoyed than i thought i'd be that it didn't have an on/off switch or a shutdown command. I've heard the new version is pretty awesome, especially with the modding community localizing stuff, making translation patches, etc.

I still bump up against the legality of it all... It'd be awesome just to google a title, download an iso or a rom or a bin, pop it onto a usb and play, instead there's all this copyright law, and debate whether or not I'm allowed to circumvent protection to back up items i own. It's been a while since I've kept paid attention to the emulation scene, so it may be different now.

I don't find any fault with the display, its not translating the Japanese games that tick my off.. Snatcher and most of the others are unplayable

The snes mini is still my favorite but the tg 16 is a solid tie with the genesis one.

I tried out a bunch of the games right off the bat. The emulation works great. I've played an hour of Soldier Blade, an hour of Alien Crush, and an hour of Millitary Madness. Millitary Madness didn't age as good as it could have. I think Advance Wars took it down about 12 notches. Still fun, still challenging, just aged. Soldier Blade is just as awesome as i rememeber, but alien crush! I hadn't played pinball in a long time and it scratched an itch. I wasn't expecting much for it but its been my favorite so far.

sounds like retro has the corona blues!

Seriously though I'm there too. The price point is rough to start with and accounting for the modules you're getting into gaming computer territory... I will say, after sprawling out all my retro mini consoles it would be nice to have something that'd play everything and not take up so many hdmi and power plug spaces...

mine shows arriving tomorrow!! Hopefully that don't change
#310
lol - no joke. i've not unwrapped half the switch games i've bought yet..
#311
not really dark but for star trek its a little dim...

There's going to be a lot of mario playing this year... paper mario looks like a good start

I was shocked today when i drove through downtown and saw tons of people out and almost no masks. Kilwins had a line down the street and everyone was on top of each other.

Just keeping in line with the Star Trek recommendations - Picard is awesome, and i'm not a huge Star Trek fan. The episode was free so i watched it then got CBS all access to get to watch the rest.

After i finish up the Seal Team episodes that i missed i'll have to check out Discovery. if it's as good as Picard i'll blow right through them.

Sweet, i'm really excited

Happy Birthday - Hope its wonderful

I preordered the purple one from Game Stop after watching this youtube video

I can't say it's going to be good buy Tommy Tallerico is so passionate and able to answer almost every concern i could have. The family friendly stuff is a limiting factor for sure, but i think this could go well and at least is collectible.

The older i get the less i can play of these types of games BUT getting a group of friends together, muting everyone but your friends or your party, and just playing to play makes it palatable, almost as much as it used to be before mortgages, marriages, kids, pandemics, having to watch the news, etc.

Its still frustrating at times, infuriating at times, but if you go into it with an IDGAF mindset and just have fun its great times in small to medium doses.

PS3 ONLY survived the 7th generation because ps plus was free, the later stage console exclusive (uncharted, metal gear solid, god of war...) and the price did finally come down. PLus costs, ps5 is gonna cost more, and if there's a shortage scalping will likely drive things up even harder. I'm going off memory (so i'm porbably wrong) but once you adjust for inflation no system over the 500 dollar mark did well. Here's looking at you Neo Geo, CDI, 3d0, Saturn, ...

One message board online said they were selling them for some ungodly amount but when I called in they were discontinued. I think they're holding some back for warranty work and then shelving the whole thing. I've not seen these in stores for a while now. I guess the windows mixed reality thing just didn't make it.

There's some great pictures of the set on this link. You can see the goofy cable - hdmi on one side that splits into dport and usb 3 on the other. That's the cable I have that's broken. The dport connector split at the seam in the metal. I tried to use a probe and bend it back in place but it didn't work.

The other problem with these headsets lies in how the hdmi end of said cable plugs into the headset. There's a profile pic of the headset that shows a pig tail coming off of it. That square box on the end is hdmi port where that cable plug in. I actually had to send my headset to hp to have that fixed. wearing the headset and moving around puts tons of strain on that port. After time the hdmi plug wiggled around in the port so much the connection became lose. HP tried to tell me it was the cable but after sending tons of pictures they exchanged everything.

I had some fun with this over the weekend and am sure it'll work its way into the rotation for a while.

I've tried to love old Atari stuff but I just cant. Atari is neat to collect but it didn't age well. I can play centipede, space invaders, defender, pong, alleyway, dig dug, pac man, and a few more but only with some upgraded controls and visuals.
#326
if their main schtick is to recreate the wii it'll be a complete failure. If motion control is a small part of the bigger picture, I can see it being fun. the controller does looks like a mash up of the dreamcast vmu, will remote, and intellivision's original.

I'd love to get behind retro's line of thinking but I have a more pessimistic view of our general population. A significant portion of our population is stupid and / or apathetic. We have to have laws concerning speeding, seat belts, drunk driving, drugs... How can we expect the general population to care for the safety of themselves as well as other? Whole families are out shopping with their kids. I could understand the case of a single parent with 0 support having to take their young kid to the store but I see entire families, mom, dad and the brood.

Now that the weather is nice, people have some unemployment money, people have some stimulus money - the places that are open stay packed. Home Depot and Lowes here stay full open to close, Walmart and every grocery store as well. The truncated hours many of these places are observing are not helping either. By shortening hours we're not spreading the crowd out over a longer period of time. Bringing every employee back as well as keeping shorter hours compounds this further.

I'm by no means a fan of big government making tons of laws and restrictions but I also think the public as a whole won't be cautious enough on their own. We wont have a vaccine available before we completely tank our economy so not opening is a bad play. I think we'd have to come up with a system of testing and treating / isolating / tracing then opening to make things come back as safe as possible. I do realize there's a lot of room for government involvement in that situation that could impede some civil liberties BUT if we do it to help and ensure help does occur without ostracizing the sick it would require far less government than the martial law scenario if this thing hits a large majority of the population.

Yeah same..

Maybe just maybe Covid-19 will reinvigorate the 3d headset craze and someone (either HP or some aftermarket company) starts putting out a replacement.

I can also see HP abandoning the design. I've sent it in for warranty repair early on (not for the cord) and I can see that issue happening again as well. Being tethered by a cord on something that encourages rapid movement creates tons of wear points that surprisingly have little in the way of strain relief. i'll prolly retire it and wait for a sale on the rift or vive.

Retro Gaming and Hardware / Intellivision Amico

I found out about this system last night. Late march preorders went out for a VIP Founder's edition in three different colors, white, black and woodgrain. It looks like preorders are closed at the intellivision website but gamestop has the white and the black version and an exclusive galaxy purple version for 249 (299 for the purple).

The president, Tommy Talarico, has been in the video game industry since the 90s. Originally a game music composer he's also been a tv personality, creative director, sound designer... He's talking about the group he's put together like they're the Traveling Wilburys.

I want it, but it's 249 - 299... for what looks a console to play cell phone games. I never had an intellivision so there's no real nostalgia there for me. I'm a sucker for mini consoles and exclusives, but 299 and purple... I would have jumped on the woodgrain set up had I seen it, but purple..... and with meh games so far. There's been an Earthworm Jim tease but it could turn out to not be a platformer.

Its hard to deny the collectability but the cost, the games, and the not so great exclusive that's available now just isn't selling me. I've subscribed to the mailing list in hopes they'll reopen preorders for the founders edition OR a new cooler looking exclusive console.

it doesn't look like its releasing with the system, in February it was mentioned as sometime q3.. I'm sure covid delays will make sure it's late too.

I am a little disappointed, there's only been 2 carts confirmed coming after the initial 8... I read somewhere it can do arcade games too... holy crap that'd completely open things up
