Retro Gaming and Hardware / Re: Evercade

I have become somewhat interested in the Polymega. I am going to put it on my bucket list.  ;) :))

I don't think business will drop off concerning the chips with the big push toward electric cars and such. I think the demand will continue. Their investment in manufacturing will be richly rewarded.

I have mostly been distracted by an obscure little handheld called the Switch.  :))
It is been a while since I pulled the Evercade out. But I do not regret purchasing the unit. It is a portable game system. And I am glad I have it in my collection. Things will change about July when I retire. There will be more time to game.

I am glad to have mine. It is awesome having so many good games that are easily accessible.

The semi-conductor shortage is hitting a lot of the manufacturing sector. The company that I work for is being effected due to the auto industry dependence on them.

I liked the last episode. Awesome. I am hoping for more, but. Is it called season 1 for a reason? Or is that just to give them an open door if they choose to come back and do something else.

Spoiler: ShowHide
I am left hanging concerning Vision. Where is he? What happened to him? I would have thought there would have been something else, the need to resolve something between Wanda and him. I would have thought there would have been one last appearance? Maybe he was getting his memory and thoughts together? Still.

Happy Birthday Helskyth!!!

@BLUEVOODU because the Fantastic Four were involved in the comics.

Yes this last episode was, WOW for me, and awesome. I am so wondering how this is going to go. How will they intertwine the comic book storyline into this? Or have a slight different take like they have creatively done with the rest of the MCU? I am going with the later. I am also wondering how this will impact the next Avengers movie.

@BLUEVOODU I don't know how I missed that. I guess my immediately going to the link because of my excitement. Hmmmmmm.... this has to be a part of my game library.

Turrican is so tough. I played that game, and played that game, and really got nowhere. It was fun. Only gave it up when Mega Turrican came out. That is a beautiful game. Mega Turrican is a Genesis game. Love that game, still play it occasionally.

I appreciate the thought. My game haul today is as follows.

Sega Genesis,
Road Blasters (good race and shoot)
Universal Soldier (run and gun)

Famicom,
Super Xevious (Gold Cart)

Switch,
Penny Punching Princess (interesting)
Grip (makes me want ridge racer or wipeout)

And I also got a stand alone "My Arcade" handheld with three favorite shooters, Galaga, Galaxian, and Xevious.

This last episode just dropped a giant hint as to what will be the catalyst for the next set of phases, like the infinity stones prior.

All of the subtle hints throughout every episode makes this a fun watch.
I have jumped to so many different conclusions with every episode. My perspective has been all over the map. The last episode was like, "boom." You're right it is so much fun to watch.

I like the Wandavision series. It is well put together, neat quality package, unlike the Mandolorian which just doesn't jell with me for some reason. I wished they had the same people working on the Mandolorian. Wandavision is MARVEL. And it has that feel to it.

General Discussion / The New Face of Retro Gaming?
February 16, 2021, 04:00:16 PM
I think that retro gaming is generational. Meaning that the ones who partake of the passion grew up during those consoles that they love to go back to. At some point that generation of gamers will pass on, get to a point where their passion grows cold, or grow into something else, etc. I don't think things like this will be passed on to another generation. I know there is virtual console, but that will only last as long as that certain age group is still around to make it profitable. Sometime within the next few years things will change.
I think there is a corner out there that we will go around and what is considered retro now will fall to the wayside and be lost. Prices will plummet. What is NES now to some, with the next generation it will possibly be PS1 or PS2, etc. NES and other cart based consoles will go the way of the Atari 2600. I still see some of the 2600 carts in one local game store, but they are a dime a dozen. Sort-of like the old gray original gameboy carts. And brick & mortar game stores are drowning right now trying to stay afloat. They are selling everything but the kitchen sink. I feel like I am in Hot Topics every time I walk into one. I have to hunt for the games.

Anyone else seeing the writing on the wall? What say you?

General Discussion / Re: LOTS of Snow...

@BLUEVOODU I am looking at a mixture of 5 or 6 inches, sleet, ice, snow. Our plant was closed yesterday and today. We are expecting another wave coming through Wednesday into Thursday. Been some dangerous roads around here. Not sure what to expect tomorrow morning as I fight my way to work.

I really don't think it could be their last console. They could take some pointers from Nintendo and with a little innovation approach gaming from a different perspective. But they have always cut their own path. Console prices cannot just keep going up. Sony cannot price themselves out of the market. I think with the PS5, hopefully, they might realize this. There is a limit gamers will spend before you become a niche market with your product.

Can the whole game industry reach a pinnacle where consoles have nowhere to go? Just where is the tech going? Without widespread access to the internet there can be no cloud gaming. Unless you isolate a segment of the gaming population. What are modern gamers looking for?

I cut the cord a loooooong time ago. I have an outdoor TV antenna. I pick up over fifty local channels, all digital with about half in HD. But with the internet, and over time, somehow, viewing habits change. My family and I spend more time streaming content than actually viewing anything local. It really didn't start out that way. And we just don't spend a lot of time in front of the TV.
Recently I have been evaluating those streaming services like Netflix, which is presently on the chopping block. They continue to raise monthly rates and I am looking very hard at what I am actually watching from them. Some of the things I can obtain from ebay for about $6 per season, free ship, old TV series. I have liked some of their original content, but waiting several years in between seasons, you tend to forget what you are waiting for. And what you warmed up to gets cold.
My Family and I have been focused on things from Youtube, Roku channel, Pandora, and some content from Pluto. That seems to be where we are at. And with me looking at retirement this year, this summer, my funds will be limited and fixed.
Luna looks to be a game orientated streaming service with what looks like a reasonable monthly rate. But that just does not appeal to me at the moment. A gaming service like that has never appealed to me. It has been very rare for me in the past to ever do any gaming online. I really don't know why but I have no interest in that type of gaming.
After I retire this year, I will probably see what limits I have to put on the amount of streaming services we keep. And review each, juggling, what is kept, and what goes, and what new one we want to try. You have to keep these things under control, or before you know it, the price will be up there with that dinosaur cable bill.

@BLUEVOODU I have yet to even consider doing a digital download of a retro game onto my Switch. Not that I wouldn't, at some point, maybe, consider it. It is just that, I have these old retro systems out and ready to go into a gaming session at any moment. Recent gaming has been Famicom and Sega Genesis.

Psycho Dream, been a while, but that is a weird game. Good action platformer. Moderately expensive game to go out and find a hardcopy. I do remember that I enjoyed playing the game and I think it would be a good game for a new generation of gamers to experience. Fire and Ice is a good puzzler. Many people that have a Switch might not have a retro console. It is good that they have access to some of this old stuff.

@BLUEVOODU Gun Nac Is a first love on the NES/Famicom. Very enjoyable shooter. Sometimes I get into "that grove" where everything goes like clockwork. Then there are "those days" if you know what I mean.

I used to really enjoy doing that.  Now I just don't have a lot of time to tinker with that anymore.  I do a lot of spinning up and down instances in the cloud... but not so much physical machines.

I was more thinking of CentOS for drivers and what-not that you were having issues with drivers.   Ie Give it a shot and see if you are able to get by the HMDI issues.
@BLUEVOODU I don't think you fully grasp the situation. The issue with the HMDI is the hardware is so old that it does not have the output for HDMI. If I had hardware new enough to have the output there would be no issue. I use old stuff.

@retro junkie have you tried CentOS 8?

@BLUEVOODU  I know that Linux is Linux, but there are those flavors that are just not appealing to me. And CentOS is one of them. I have tried it several times over the years. The flavor of a linux distro is mainly in the feel and overall execution of the OS. And due to the fact that I use older equipment, some distros just do not fair very well.
For some reason I am just so fascinated with getting older hardware to run with a modern distro and make it usable. That is the reason I love Bodhi. Zorin is not bad, good distro, but Bodhi will make something like, my desktop, a Lenovo ThinkCentre M58e 7298 become a modern workhorse even though it is about 12 years old. I will purposely purchase old hardware and make it usable. My Lenovo desktop I purchased for $30 with no hard drive. Sometimes I get that itch to go onto ebay looking for something old with no hard drive, no memory, grab it up and make it usable. I have no idea why I find that so satisfyingly fun and fascinating.

@retro junkie and @CreepinDeth That's what we need... an open source topic.  Good suggestion!  Start one up :)

Were you having issues with HDMI out on Linux?
@BLUEVOODU Just saw this. No I was not having any issues with HDMI. I just did not have any hardware that had an HDMI out.
I have been recently pulling out a couple of old laptops and installing some of the up to date Linux distros, Zorin and Bodhi.

@BLUEVOODU gun nac, hammerin harry, gun smoke, balloon fight. There is a lot more strategy in these game than what I thought. Especially hammerin harry. I thought it was just a straight hitting. But harry has got some moves. gun nac is one I always play when it comes to the NES, I spend so much time on this game. I am so glad I got this game many years ago, even if it is a famicom game, you got to love that pin converter. gun smoke is a fun shooter. Balloon fight, I got hooked on it with the Gameboy version years ago.
