Just finished Skylanders Giant in story mode on my Wii U. Not complete as I have not found everything to be found. I started it this past weekend and was determined to finish before the years end.
#602
Aaahhh......corrected. I just did a quick cut and paste. I am going to put this into an excel sheet as a checklist.

The time that I have spent with the console the more I feel that this system deserved more. I know the name "Wii U" led to some confusion, but I am wondering if the concept was a little behind the time, maybe too late. This should have been the Wii.

It is almost like Nintendo pulled a 32X on gamers by throwing this system out there until the true console was ready, which was the Switch. Because I really think that the Switch was there almost ready when this was released to the market.

Edit: Just found this list!!!

From what I understand, correct me if I am wrong, that there were only about 160 physically released games? I might consider collecting all of the games myself, targetrasp.

I stopped by my local gamestop today, haven't been in there for at least five years. LOL And did some Wii U shopping. I grabbed up Breath of the Wild, new, for $34 dollars. The rest was buy two get one free. With this and ebay, my funds are depleted for a while. Unless I can win an ebay auction for a couple of dollars.  ;)

Zelda: Breath of the Wild
Super Mario 3D World - $9.50 ebay
Star Fox Zero - $12 tracking it in the mail, should be Monday delivery, You got a good deal Blue
Star Fox Guard -99 cents
Nintendoland- 95 cents Gamexchange
Skylanders Giants- 95 cents GameXchange
Disney Infinity 3.0 free
Skylanders Swap Force free
The Lego Movie $1 ebay plus $3 ship
Skylanders Trap Team $1.99
Hyrule Warriors $14
Xenoblade Chronicles $14

And I won Sonic All Star Racing for $2.10 plus a couple dollars ship last night on ebay.

Right now two games that have surfaced as being quick favorites, Xenoblade Chronicles and Hyrule Warriors. And of course this has awaked renewed interest in Skylanders, been playing heavy during my time off. Go back to work this coming Wednesday.  :(

BLUEVOODU you are right about the GameCube backward compatibility. I am going to miss that badly. I will now have to pull the Cube out every time I get that itch.

With my Wii dying on me, I felt that the best replacement would be a Wii U. For just $40 I could have replaced my Wii with a Wii. But add $60 and I could upgrade to a Wii U black 32gb model. It is the most reasonable path to go and plus I have the backward compatibility with all my Wii game library. Highly recommend this for anyone that still plays their Wii when it dies.

Received my Wii U the day after Christmas. First game I played was Tatsunoko vs Capcom.  ;)
I ran by my local GameXchange, needed a charger for the gamepad, and picked up Nintendoland 95 cents and Skylanders Giants 95 cents. Grabbed up Bleach for the Wii $2.95. Impressed with the console. Nintendo would have had better success if they had named this something else and avoided the confusion. This console is not a Wii. I know that it had to maintain features so that it could have the previous generation compatibility, but this console is so much more than the Wii. I am looking forward to some of the games that take advantage of the system hardware. Already it was great that Skylanders Giant offered me the option to play on the gamepad large screen and not the TV. Although I understand that not all games give you that choice, it was still awesome. Been watching game reviews and gameplay on youtube. My list is growing. I will make some decisions this weekend on what will be next. The pad is not as heavy as I thought it would be and the screen is very responsive. So far, lovin it.

I think that I am the only one that can enjoy a game system out of its era, or generation. LOL
Especially one that is considered a flop. But remember, just because it "sort-of" failed in the gaming market, does not mean that it is a bad system.

This is the best time to purchase games for this console. Nobody wants the games anymore. LOL

Time & Eternity was $19, everything else was $1 to $8. Most under $5. The PSP games were $1.15 each with a couple dollars shipping. White Knight was $3.65.

The Street Fighter Alpha 2 is a plastic reproduction box for my game. But my opinion on the game, mine being the Super Famicom version SF Alpha Zero 2, is that I think it is the best version of Street Fighter on the console. I have read that many thought it was awful.  Not sure if the Japanese version is better, but I have no problem with any of the gameplay. It is awesome to me to be able to play a game like this on the SNES. To me, it is my go to SNES fighter. It is one of those games that I will pick up and play weekends, Holidays, and during my retro marathons.

I am a Lunar fan, have both releases for my Playstation 1. Also have one for the GBA. So I will give you my thoughts once I start fiddling with it.

Okay......my game related gifts that I received this Christmas. My Wife gave me the DSi "Super Mario Bros. 25th Anniversary" Edition. It is in mint condition. Totally elated over this item. I am almost positive it was owned by a girl. They take better care of their stuff than us guys. LOL The boxes on the right are reproduction plastic cases for my games. I am wanting cases like this for some of my favorite games. Slowly collecting. Adds a little class to those games I pick up that do not have the original boxes. Plus I love it.

Umm.... the DS game, is a multicart. I got two of these, one has 208 games and the other has 468 ds games. All ds games. Between the two, there are repeats, so I am thinking close to 500 games. There is shovelware mixed with the great stuff. Typical China piracy from ebay.  ??? But enjoyable. It was a gift.

What I picked up for myself, LOL The NES cart is totally mind blowing. It is the "Super Mario Bros. 3 Mix." Someone broke the base code of the SMB 3 game, and then found out what everything was, rewrote the whole game. It contains worlds from every Mario game made plus the outfits. Even the graphics have been upgraded. This is so good that Nintendo needs to hire this guy. Best hack and homebrew that I have played, period. Got this out of my mailbox on Christmas eve. Winning,  ;)
The PSP games are from the PSP in Japan. Some great games that leave me scratching my head as to why these were not released here in the US.

I have been playing a little of Diablo 3 on my PS3 this morning. I have had the game for months but just haven't sit down and tried it out. I had it on easy just to get the feel of the game. I am thinking that I have played the game before, but it was not 3, been a long time ago.

Also played Time & Eternity which is a manga style anime feel JRPG game. I got into it passed the intro and title screen, into the gameplay. I find it interesting. I have not played anything like this. I do like the battle system which you can stand at a distance or move up close, and dodge your enemy's attacks. You are limited as to where you can move during the battle. Up close hand to hand, at a distance you can use your rifle, you also have your helper. It is sort-of a romance story line, but  I either missed it or it has not explained why I am fighting monsters in my journey. I do know why I am on my journey.

Probably a bad time to start this at Christmas. I could easily become distracted.

Okay.... this is awkward. My Wii died on me.  >:( Now I can't play Tatsunoko vs Capcom!!! Whats a gamer to do in this situation. After much reading, youtube videos, and fidgeting, I did the only thing I could do. Decided the best replacement for my Wii would be a Wii U. SO.......... I purchased one and it should be on its way to arrive next week unless the Holidays throws a monkey wrench in there somewhere. Also picked up Mario 3D land and Star Fox Zero. I am going to make a list of games. Zelda Breath of the Wild will be the first on that list.  ;)

I kept reading about this game. Watched some youtube gameplay and had to have it. Saw this on Amazon for $10 used with free shipping, sweet. I was surprised by what I have received. Looks in mint shape and unused. I had read that it does not play in the original SNES, only clone hardware. But my SNES is launch hardware, I know, I was there, picked it up personally. This thing works in my SNES, so there has been some kicking and knock out drag out fights goin on here. Two player coop, single player fun! This is from the same folks that brought us Unholy Night, except this was done right, with love.

General Discussion / Is this Game New??
December 22, 2018, 11:23:03 AM
This week I decided to purchase Time & Eternity for my PS3 from ebay. A used one was a few dollars less but being a few dollars I thought "hey" I will go ahead and purchase this game new. That way I would have the booklet and everything. When I received this yesterday, I noticed, there seems to be a couple of hole punches through the bar-code. It has what appears to be the original factory cellophane wrapper, folds, etc.  What is this? Has anyone ever purchase a game that was like this? Everything is crisp and new. It does not look used at all. The only other time that I have seen this is in a used or refurbished game.

I didn't know whether or not to post this in this section. But if we stay on topic, the subject of the packaging, then maybe it will be okay?

My work cell phone is an iphone 5c. I liked it so much that I got iphone 4s that were unlocked so I could use a trackfone sim card. I got one for my Wife and Daughter. I am paying $15 a month for each phone. We had LG trackfones before and the minutes we had on those transfered over giving an unreal amount of internet time. The LGs did not have internet but it somehow calculated the time to the minutes we had built up, crazy. I really like the iphone better than the LG phones we were using. Maybe the LG being trackfone specific, locked, might had something to do with their performance, don't know. Just glad to be rid of them. I never liked android on a tablet, too many nightmares. I know one of my sisters, along with her family, switched to iphones and was glad to be free of android. Same with some fellow workers. Android is so unstable and quirky.

@retro junkie lol... I don't remember that game either. would you recommend it?

If you like adventurish, final fightish, and old school pattern bosses, with a sort-of storyline, you might get a thrill out of the game. Once you beat the game you have all the special stages that you opened up to finish. This is a one or two nighter, depends how you pace yourself in the game. The game gave me a satisfying Batman mini game feel. The animation is very good. It might be better than the cartoon, never watched Brave and Bold series.

If you are itching for a quick DS game I would recommend it. I think there is not enough here to motivate most gamers to come back to, once you have unlocked everything, unless you are a Batman fan. Definitely fan based. It will be one of those games that I will return to, just to use the Batman character to beat up some bad guys. It is a pretty cheap pickup on eBay.

Young 8, 9, or 10 year old would play it to death.
#619
I ran across a game I had not heard of nor knew anything about. I picked it up real cheap, Batman: Brave and Bold for the DS. I have had a ball going through this game. I have went completely through it and now I am working on the special challenge stages that you open up. I would say that the game is not that difficult with just enough puzzle element figuring out how to get through the stages and defeat the bosses. Batman can upgrade his arsenal with the coins you collect through the stages. (Yeah I know, he is supposed to own this stuff already.) You team up with a Brave and Bold hero with abilities you will need to get through each particular stage. You switch up using the touch screen, tag team wrestling style. There is also a special move using both. Did I just review this game?  ::)

Everything save for the two old systems are running Win 10. The older two are running 3.11 and Win 98.
Whoa, I haven't seen Win 3.11 in a long time. I used to have it on floppies. Probably still do somewhere.

Retro Gaming and Hardware / Thanksgiving Day Marathon!!
November 25, 2018, 11:02:57 AM
Meant to post this Thanksgiving night, but.... not sure where to post this really.

5:00AM and it is that time again for smashing, shooting, and blowing your way through game after game! Rules are as follows,
1. Use up all your lives and record your high score, or progress, in a game.
2. Continues may be used and your highest score or progress recorded.
3. After your lives are used up, go to the next game. Mood swings determines your direction.
4. Must stop for food and bathroom breaks. We don't want any health or hygiene issues. (Wives are funny like that.)
Haven't played the game in a while? That adds fun to the challenge.

First stop XBOX 360
Death Smiles: The game is so gorgeous and fun to play. One of the best horizontal shooters. I took a chance and used one continue. I was afraid to go another, ended with 2,508,755.

Tried my digital download of Tempest on my 360. Whoa, well this is so embarrassing. It did not consider my score significant enough to acknowledge I had been playing. Sort-of like that first time, lost that quarter!

Breakfast break, (Elevator music playing, musical ensemble here of sax, horns, and electric piano which is also keeping the beat.)
Okay, I am back.

Esp galuoa 2, Black Label: Japan Import. This is a beautiful bullet hell vertical shooter. Even though I got a score of 9,887,712, I never made it out of the first level. At least I don't think I did. No wait I made to the second level, used only one continue. Bullet Hell shooters are confusing to me. I never know whether I am fighting a boss or a regular guy, you know? Very satisfying play.

Akai Katana: This game reminds me of Progear in its presentation. Another bullet hell shooter, more of a sort-of side scrolling horizontal shmup. Didn't last long but I did manage to score 1,219,059. That might have been by accident. Another satisfying play. Did try it in Novice mode in the end and I don't think my survival was that much improved though I was able to increase my score to 2,723,470.

Geometry Wars: 360 digital download. I so like this better on a my DS. Really bombed out at 18,175.

(What, they might not be able to have the balloons due to the wind? What is the use of having the parade if you can't have the balloons? Don't the Firemen have those round things to catch people? Now I know how Joker must have felt. "He took my balloons." I can relate.)

SNES, or SFC
Honey I'm home.

Darius Twin: Familiar territory. It was games like this that was the reason I played in the 90's. This is the best Darius game on the SNES console. Been playing this off and on. Ended this with 2,629,900.

(paused* The levels are geared toward one thing and that is to lead you to the boss. Their purpose is to beat you down until you are a whimpering mess when you arrive.)

You want this? Come and get it. Want Earth? Not today. Not on my watch.

(Youtube live, Verizon has the best view of the MACY Parade. No interruptions like the Networks do and augmented reality. So cool.)

Cybernator: Shooting and blasting your way through the enemy contra style. I was short lived in this one. Second stage, meteors got me.

Metal Warriors: This must be the spiritual successor to Cybernator. Same type of game play only this is more intense which makes it more fun. Even though there is some English in the menus, seemingly a lot of the story is in another language on my cart. This is new to my collection, so it is still considered to be new to play. Didn't last through the first level, but it was fun. Get some! Get some! Get some!

Skyblazer: This is a surprisingly good platformer by SONY. The character has Spiderman's ability to stick to walls, which comes in handy. But at times it irritates me when I am trying to get to somewhere and I stick. Password enabled.

Vampire's Kiss: The big bull thing kept butting me into the hole in the ground. Didn't get very far.
Dracula X: Is this the same game? I didn't know. Oops! Aaagggh! Between those blasted bats, lizard men, and me jumping into the abyss on the third level! Now I feel like I must stop Christmas from coming.

Musya-Gousou Jinrai Densetsu: Sort-of an action platformer Samurai type game in a Nightmarish world. I find it hard. And I have to really get into it and play it a lot to get anywhere in it. It looks like not today.

Parodius Da!: Not my day. Did not get past the first stage boss.

Opps! Another break. Gotta help the Wife with fixing the meal so,

More elevator music.....

After our Thanksgiving Day Dinner I spent the afternoon learning how to repair a DS lite. I changed out the top screen and put the whole thing into another shell. I ended up also doing one for my Wife, a Pokemon Yellow.

Getting some funny colors on that top screen. The hinge was broken and cutting the ribbon.

Hope everyone enjoyed the Holiday. I am having a long weekend, gaming.

I don't think the mentality of the Game Companies are focused on the fact that we want to keep our games for our whole lifetime. I am used to picking up most of my gaming library after the end of a console's lifespan. I am a cheap gamer. I like picking up bargains in that special section of a game store. I like to touch and hold onto my games.

But I do think we are headed in the direction of digital media only. It is just how and when. There are a lot of issues that I think they will have to come to grips with before it is accepted by the gaming community. Then again it might be cloud gaming that takes the place of the present media.

Bear with me,

At my age, in my sixties, I have changed over the years in my perspective regarding how I view entertainment. I have went from TV antenna to cable and now back to antenna. But there are such a difference in the tech and the way I view TV. I went through all the Betamax and VHS archiving craze. Had a brief taste of the CED video records. Plunged into the DVDs and eventually Blu Ray. Now I have the HD antenna reception of around 50 channels, better quality than cable or dish. But the internet has affected my viewing habits. My Family and I spend more viewing time on our Roku TV with youtube, Netflix, and Vudo, and a few other apps. Our archiving is centered around purchasing, for example, a complete set of a certain TV series that we would like to keep for repeated viewing, favorites. Movies are no longer purchased on DVD because we did not see it at theater, but we rent it on Vudo. And as for some things that we find ourselves watching, you could never tell me years ago that I would be just setting and watching something like Metal Jesus Rocks, live webcam of a feline rescue centre, some amateur showing me how to do something, people doing stupid things,  or binge watching a TV series that just released on Netflix, etc, etc, etc. I could go on. We only occasionally reference the TV antenna programming. I don't think our Family is alone in this. I have people that I am working around seeking a way to cut the cord.

That is why I think DVD and Blu Ray are at the end of their lifespan. I feel that the gaming console manufacturers know this. The media is just not capable of handling the new console technology. That is why we are waiting to load up everything before we can play a new game. The drives just cannot keep up with the demand of the games. That is why they keep nudging on digital as a viable media for gaming, that and it gives them more control. It is interesting to note that there is no new replacement tech being offered as an alternative for the present media. The sure sign evidence of its demise is in the bargain bins and cheap players on the shelves. In the past any outdated media always went this route before fading from the store shelves. And usually you have Sony throwing out there something new like 8mm video tapes. Wow that did not last long. Remember CED and laser disc? Watching things progress from Betamax to Blu Ray has been a bumpy road. I think the media issue is why we see Nintendo, at the moment, going back to carts. If anyone is successful in pulling off a plan that the consumer will bite into everyone in the gaming industry will jump on board, immediately. The question is, who will lead the way, Microsoft? Whoever does will set standards.
#626
I'm a feely touchy gamer as you may know. I like to have the media in my hand. I am retro in my gaming, love my carts. When it comes to the DVD, CD, Blu ray gaming systems, I am a bit reluctant, and feel screamish about forking over dough for that type of console. Something about moving parts that bother me. If I have a system like the Sega CD that dies on me, I dump it and sell the games. That will be the destiny of any of those type systems in my care. Backward compatibility will distance itself from the games that I loved to play over time. But for my retro there are the clones which are getting closer to the real thing, cough, analog consoles, cough.

With that being said,

In light of the minis that seem to be so popular, I can see the digital consoles making their way into the main stream of gaming, if they tread softly. If Microsoft offers this as a console variation of their main one then they will make an impact.

If I see games that draw my interest and the price is right, maybe at that point they are offering something at, lets say $129 ballpark figure,  I might bite. I would look at it as a configurable mini. I couldn't look at it as a serious gaming console.
#627
I am starting to see a lot of hub bub concerning the possibility that Microsoft may release an Xbox One that will be digital only and no disc drive. Possible of a program where you turn in your games for a download code. Some of the argument is lower cost for the console. I started thinking about this and wondered, even though the $200 price point was thrown around, what price point would cause to go all digital? What would they have to sell the Xbox One "all digital" before you would lean in that direction? If they could come out with a killer game line up, which, too me, seems lacking at this point, would that tempt some gamers to jump on board? Is the time ripe? Digital download does seem to be a big part of the industry.

What say you?
#628
So you can get Overwatch with or without bonus content?  :-\

Good price. Tempting, very tempting. But I don't like first person stuff.
#629
I would be hard pressed to want that for $40. But then again they did not fully disclose the titles. Many of the games, which draws my interest, that you list, I all ready have on NES carts. You would think that they could have filled that with 40 games for the 40th year anniversary.  I don't like when they hide the contents. They could have did a remix with modern graphics for HDMI game play. That would have been cool.
#630
My Family usually don't venture out into the Black Friday madness. My Daughter and I wait until about noon and then we hit up Walmart looking for DVD and Blu-ray deals. That is about all of the participation we do. We have really gotten all of our Christmas shopping done at this point every year. As for games, I'm retro.  8)

But I do agree that things have been rather quite with not the excessive hype as usual.
