My experience with public restrooms, especially on business trips, is that they need a few gallons of gasoline and a match. A good burning out before even an attempt to use would be a good idea.

MUSHA- Played through first level, bombed out with the boss, I usually do better than this. Mega Turrican- Got into the second level, water kept getting me and washing me away. Thunder Force 3- again could not get pass the first stage. This a bad day!! Truxton- very brutal but ended it in the second stage. A little happy with that one, after all it is Truxton.  Arrow Flash- Looks like second stage is all I can do today! What is it with these aliens today? I bombed out with Gaiares too. Nothing really clicked today. Sorry to everyone, your whole Galaxy has been destroyed. My prototype ship just could not do it today. LOL

Just a warm welcome to all the new members. 

This is what it is like to want a physical copy. I just found out this week while on ebay that this game is selling for around $60. Many times what I paid for it some years ago. Love this Famicom game, fun shooter. It could increase in price a hundred fold, I still would not sell. This is my real copy of a great game.


This game is the first time I paid as much as $85 for a game. The cart, with the box and booklet sells for several times over that. When I saw this, I could not purchase it fast enough. Such a deal. Only 10,000 made and released. Another one of those great games that I love to play. It is my copy and I will never sell it.

Just got through eating fried chicken. It is not on my diet, but it was good.

I want one bad. It is not like the cheap clones. This is real hardware, not a console on a chip. Price of admission is heavy.

In the first 5 years of my married life, my wife and I purchased our first color TV. It is a Sanyo 19" with no RCA input. All it has is two screws for old antenna wire and a input for cable TV. Surprisingly it is still going. It has become my retro console game playing TV. They don't make-um like that anymore. I have a converter box in order to hook up my consoles which have RCA outputs.

I grew up with black & white TV. So finally having color was great. 

Exactly what it says. Anything to do with these retro consoles. 

This afternoon I have been playing my Super Famicom on the CRT that I originally played my SNES on when I brought it home from Walmart. Darius Twin, I love this game. Love the whole series as a matter of fact. Some of the games has such haunting and enchanting music which creates its own atmosphere of an unforgettable shooter. Darius Gaiden on the Saturn took away many hours. Looks like I will be here with Darius Twin for a few days. This is the Super Famicom version. No problem negotiating any of the menus. Only the story is in Japanese.

To me, taking the cart and pushing it into the console is all a part of the experience. Holding it in my hand and feeling it with my fingers. Having the hardcopy also gives me the feeling that I own the game. It's mine. I feel that way about carts more so than I do about discs. I am kind of queasy when it comes to any of the CD based units. I feel that when they die at some point, it is over. Where as the carts have clones, even though they are so iffy.
I know that space is a problem, I know that all to well. I just like sometimes looking through my collection. Just having it in front of me gives me the mood, and I think, hey I haven't played this in a while.

The SP brighter wasn't really on the shelf that long, the DS pushed it off. That backwards compatibility and a new machine, it was an easy kill. It was just available long enough for me to pick up one in my locality. The games hung around a little longer due to the compatibility. I was glad to get one at the time.

Hmmmm... how many here, and including future members, have a Neo Geo CD console setting to the right of their desktop like I do? 
I am not sure how to respond.
This is the reason I created a thread, "Everything Sega Genesis," so things would be more localized. I plan on doing that with the SNES and NES combined, etc.

If Sony does have a successor, they need to reinvent the way they approach portable gaming. Support on their part would have made the Vita very big in the handheld market. The way it was treated by Sony and it still had the impact, that it did in gaming, says a lot for the possibilities it had as a portable. Sony could have made it as big as the PS3 and PS4. All it needed was a little of their attention. It was being mostly kept alive by a trickle of imports and indie games. If that is still happening. Hard for me to tell. There is really no activity in my town's gaming stores, except for a few used games being offered. I don't think the console is being manufactured any more, is it?  I really don't want them to bring anything out if they are just going to kill it after it is released.
I miss what my Vita used to be. 
I think there is room for a second portable in the market. I have a PSP and a Vita. I would be more than willing to invest in a Vita 2.

Great post, Retro - I love my old GBA SP.    Goldensun, Lord of the Rings, Metroid Zero Mission, Metroid Fusion, many more.... and my personal favorite - Advance Wars.   I gamed a lot on this.   Such an impressive device with battery as well.  Why?  I broke this system out.. it hasn't been charged in a minimum of 6-7 years.   I was still able to play it.

What do you mean bright screen? You mean backlit?


Gunstar heroes... I never tried this game.  I would like to try it.


Alien Hominid - ah man.... completely forgot about this game!   I Think I bought the Gamecube version, but I would need to verify to be sure.

What I mean by bright screen is the back-lit version. I remember it being referred to, or nicknamed, as that back then. And the Hominid for gba is ever bit as fun as the GameCube version.

There is the recent promise to do more first party games. I hope it turns out to be a similar promise that Sony has made. But I think Sony has seen the effect that it has had on the success of their system. More single player story driven games. I can get into a good story driven game and I compare that to a good book.  i wish to see the same type of support that the 360 had, good library.

I will take the first watch. Got into some gaming yesterday with the Genesis. Only a few games.


Undeadline アンデッドライン was ported to the Genesis, or Mega Drive Japan in 1991. And did not leave Japan. I have a reproduction fan translated cart. This is a Shoot'em up basically.


You get an over head view vertical scrolling with what looks to be a warrior. And I get the feel of the game Gauntlet while playing, except it is in an open environment. This means that the easy mode is not that easy and you are the target. I wish for obstacles to walk behind for protection. And in some areas you do find some. In "crazy" mode it is very suicidal. You can put your shield up but you cannot fire. Plenty of enemies continue to come your way. You have powerups and little helpers  that you pick up from treasure chests. It doesn't seem to last long but you do get three hits before you killover. Stages seem short, but long when you are in the middle of the continue barrage of enemies and bullets.

End stage bosses need a head shot, or at least the one I actually reached did. Don't walk into fire though. You can't kill fire. Fire will kill you. This game is so brutal.

Verytex ベリテックス a space shooter. Now this is what I love. Weapons, powerups, shields, bombs. Vertical scrolling shooter plowing through tons of those pesky galactic aliens bent on destroying our little corner of the universe. I think they have brain damage.

Levels seem long and satisfying.  Easy pick up and play fun. Music is good and catchy victory compositions.

Biggest problem is that when you are fully powered up and you are facing the end boss, if you lose it, you lose it all. No use trying with an under power ship.



WHAT!?  How did that game get into my Genesis!!  This was supposed to be a shooter weekend!!! Saturday Night Slam Masters!?   Haggar's my man. Ummmm..... this game is a must play for anyone that loves a good Capcom fighter. This is my favorite wrestling game in the 16-bit era.

Thought I would create a space for the Genesis/Mega Drive. Anything pertaining to the 16-bit console can be placed here. This was my first console I purchased. The SNES had not been released. I was 34 years old. My first game that I purchased with the console was Hellfire. Spent all my gaming time with that game instead of Sonic.

The NES was a spark that lit a flame. It was a time which you had to depend on gaming magazines for any information. And that was usually months old news. It was a time of heavy arcade influence in gaming. Small groups of programmers just barely able to find a space, like their garage, to work. PCs were finding their footing in gaming. The industry was breaking ground, laying foundations for the Generations of gaming consoles that followed. It was an exciting time that was full of energy and the atmosphere was electrifying. Those were days that I will long remember and glad I was there to be a part of them.

Defiantly Dragon Ball series for me. There are those individual movies hanging out there that I like, but for a series it is Dragon Ball. I have the complete series of Dragon Ball GT and Z on DVD.

But I haven't really explored that many anime series. I have always liked the Bleach games and I may need to look up the series.

Made an update today with a Japan N64 Fighting game.

There are those games that actually define a console. The Panzer Dragoon series were part of those games that defined the Saturn and set it apart.

In January of 2015 I happened upon the info about a Neo Pocket Color Slim which was released in Japan right after the release of the original Pocket.



When I saw the Yellow Crystal, just had to have it. And I am so glad I purchased this awesome redesign.



The slimness of the new design may not seem that much on the outward appearance, but in your hands it makes all the difference in the world. The original feels so chunky afterward.

This is a thread to give you an idea of games that are available for the N64 that does not necessarily require you to know Japanese for you to fully enjoy. If you want the total N64 gaming experience then you owe it to yourself to import some of these games. You will find that you really don't know the N64 like you thought you did. I have a whole new perspective when someone says, Nintendo 64. And I am at a loss as I contemplate what the Nintendo 64 could have been. I think that the N64 was underrated in its glory days simply because it was cart based instead of disc like its competitors. But it had games that the competitor consoles could never think about running. It may have had a memory limited medium, but it was a powerful system in its day.  I will try to give an honest assessment of each game.

Bangai O


From what I understand, there were only 10,000 copies of this game produced. That means in reality that not everyone that owns an N64 console can possess this game. That seems to make this game the Holy Grail of N64 game collections. And from looking at online auctions, there are a lot of games that no longer have the box and booklet included. This has created some very inflated prices for a copy complete and in the box. Even the stray cart carries a big price tag. Presently, as of this writing, I have seen a cart go for as high as $129 USD and a CIB go for at least $225 USD. (Somehow condition does not seem to be an issue.) Which makes me so happy I was able to grab a nice copy for $85 including box and booklet. I don't have what seems to be a couple of cards, possibly registration card, etc. So mine is not complete by "collector standards."

All this fuss over a "2D" shooter! But this is no ordinary shooter. This game was designed and created by Treasure, the same people that brought us Sin & Punishment. I've played the Dreamcast and the DS versions, but this is my first time experiencing the original N64 game. You have two different shots, a bouncing shot and a sort-of homing shot. And then there is the mega shot when holding down the button it increases until you have 100 shots to release. Each level can be considered short by some with plenty of things to blow up until you find the boss. The gameplay is wacky, open, and free. Even though you are timed, there is still time enough to blow practically everything you desire in each level before running across the boss. Collecting fruit from the things you destroy has something to do with your weapons upgrade and  at some point you are given a choice of three things, but I have yet to figure this out. Everything is in Japanese. The game is simple mindless fun and satisfying. If you love the shooter genre, like I do, then you will  delight in playing this game. To me, it was worth the price of admission. This is total accessible to anyone not understanding Japanese.  And it does not take long to learn the menus. Not sure but I think memory seems to be saved to cart.



In comparing the different console versions where the game is found: Music wise, each version of the game has its own composer. I get the same electricity from the music but they are different compositions. The N64 Bangai-o has its own feel. The Dreamcast, even though the same in concept, has its own feel. The gameplay has been changed, evolved, tweaked, depends on the one playing, whether this is good or bad. And I think the music is a part of the atmosphere. Using the N64 controller seems to give me a better experience, my opinion. After playing all,I tend to lean toward the N64 version as the better game. I look at it as the original intended game and the rest being just variations. I now have the N64, Dreamcast, and the DS versions.
This game is an awesome blast fest on the N64.

Sin & Punishment

If you have ever played any of the old school "forward moving" rail shooters like Space Harrier, then you sort-of, kind-of, know what to expect. The voice acting is totally in English, the story is easy to follow. The subtitles and menus are in Japanese. It is not difficult to get into and play. Easily one of the top games for the system and could have easily exploded on the N64 in the US. The whole package is powerful and delivery is top notch. You will forget that you are playing a rail shooter. This is loads of fun and very enjoyable. The giant millipedes in the first level blew me away. Learn to control your character. Before you press start, let the game run. There is a tutorial that runs as a demo. It shows you completely how-to on gameplay, a feature just like some of the old arcade games I use to know. This game, is what awesome feels like.


Neon Genesis Evangelion

The game has a cinematic approach in its gameplay.  Chances are, if you are not a fan of the anime, then there is a possibility it might be a hard sell. There is no English, therefore, you will not know what is going on, unless, I am told, that if you watch the anime, then you will know what is happening. Your responses in the game can, which need to be a precise timing, not really sure how yet, become the same scene as in the anime. My playing has resulted two different scenarios in my ending of the first level. The levels consist of something like a boss battle, and played out like a story. Each level is called a mission, and it would benefit the player to press downward at the mission title screen to get the screen of the button moves, or control. To me, the game is impressive and something totally different in experience. I have never watched the anime but I have enjoyed playing this game. I know that it has gotten bad reviews in the past, but I have a certain appreciation for this game.



RakugaKids

This game was released in Europe and Japan. You do not want the PAL version, it would be slow on your NTSC N64 system. You want the Japan version. I have often read discussions on the net concerning the viability of 2D games on the N64. I have wondered if they knew that 2D meant two dimensional gaming. From games like this one I can come to the conclusion that the N64 is very capable in delivering a 2D experience. I just think everyone was too busy wanting to cash in on the 3D craze back then. Even though this game's graphics seem geared toward children, there is some heavy fighting going on here, and simple fun. I am trying to learn some of the moves, because this is not Street Fighter. I am needing to search the net to see anyone has posted character moves. I am getting so pounded, especially by the robot. The game is wacky and yet one of the best fighter for the system besides Smash Bros. This game made me want Street Fighter Alpha on the N64. RakugaKids is an incredible game. If you like fighters, then this will cause you to scratch your head, wondering why Capcom never stepped into the N64 ring. This game was a very welcome entry for Konami, a classic for the system.



Puyo Puyo Sun

If you like puzzle games especially the Puyo series, then you know what this game is like. This is a "2D" puzzle game, one of those good "Tetris era me-too" spin off games. Nothing wrong with taking a concept and putting a unique twist to it, just so you do it right. The game is built around cutesy anime chibi characters, so if that causes you some type of seizure, then look away. Working your way through start, you are given a choice of three characters, the one on the left is easy mode, the middle is normal, and the right is hard. You are matched against the computer. You also have single player and I know two players, not sure how many players can play at once. I am assuming four which would make since. It is all in Japanese. But with a little exploring It is easy to make your way through this game, very intuitive. Very fun game, shades of Mean Bean Machine feel here, of course.


Dezaemon 3D

I thought Star Soldier: Vanishing Earth was the only old school shooter for the N64 until I discovered this game. It is not marketed as a shooter, but as a workshop to create your own shooters. Your have all the tools at your finger tips to let your creativity flow. There are two, very playable, shooters included that were supposedly made with the tools. One is similar to "Layer Section" in gameplay but with graphics similar to Vanishing Earth. The other one is a cutesy shooter. Both games are average at best and would not be the reason to want this, unless you are a shooter fan. Which brings me to the point of the purpose of this cart and my dilemma. The game is for someone, like me, who loves this genre and would love to tinker in designing my own masterpiece. There are a few English words that help, but it is all mostly in Japanese, hence my dilemma. I want to spend some time with this and learn how to use the menus and interface. And that would be the only way someone would get the most out of this game. But I will still pull it out just to play the samples. The downfall of this cart is that everything is saved to the cart and not the N64 memory cards, you would never be able to share. This game is a part of a series of Dezaemon produced by this company for various consoles, SNES being one of them.



Super Robot Spirits

Are you a fan of Gundam? Then here is a fighter on the N64 for you. There have been standards set when it comes to fighters, first it was Street Fighter that paved the way. Tekken changed the rules at one point I believe. One cannot argue the influence that those two games have had on the genre. That being said, this game does not come close to anything like the games that this fell from. This is really a 2D game, in gameplay, in a pseudo 3D environment. Graphics are blocky, but serves the purpose needed in communicating the robotic feel of the units. Backgrounds in the game lack imagination. For some reason this game was bashed and had very bad reviews when it landed on the N64. It is not that bad. It may be due to the expectations by gamers because of the standards that have been set. I find it a nice little fighter in the list of things available for the console, but then again, I find Dark Rift a very enjoyable game too. You can fight on the ground as well as in the air, your choice. There are moves to be learned as is the nature of all fighters, and there seems to be certain moves that sparks a dramatic animation for the move. I have made it all the way to the end just to have my metal backside handed to me by the end boss. I find the game fun and worthy to have in my N64 library.



Transformers: Beast Wars Transmetals

After playing some of the above fighters and then going back to this game, it gives me mixed feelings. It can be fun, just not awesome. I am including this game because it is so much different in feel and gameplay than its US counterpart. I believe it to be the better game. This fighter is won by strategy against your opponents. Having a very big playing field, something that the US version does not have, to maneuver your character, adds to this concept. I have stood back at an extreme distance and shot at my opponent until he was knocked out. But this does not always work, and not with every character. There are moves to be learned and as with the Super Robot Spirits game, certain moves spark that certain dramatic animation for the move. And of course you have two different modes to transform back and forth at will. If you are a fan of the series then this would be your game on the N64. Non fans may pull this from the shelf occasionally, maybe, sort-of.


Flying Dragon 2


This is a real treat. Rarely do you see this game up on ebay. It is called SD飛龍の拳伝説, translated literally as "SD Legend of the Fist of the Flying Dragon." And it is the second in the series of what was called "Flying Dragon" on the N64 in the US. In my opinion, this should have been the game that was released in the US. Maybe Flying Dragon was just a bone they threw us and we did not bite. This game is so good. I literally cannot stop playing this game, fun, fun, fun.


The first thing that you will notice is that this cart is Super Deform mode only. The Virtual mode is gone. All of the enhancements, improvements, and extra features are all focused on the SD game. The gameplay is really 2D, whether you are in single or two player mode, the evading gives a little feel of a 3D arena. There are more characters, some hidden and more treasures, or items, to win, collect. The control seems tighter and responsive. Gameplay feels fast and fluid. Gameplay moves are the same as the first game. Fighter moves are easy to get into and become comfortable with.

After playing the first game I was very familiar with the moves and control. So it was very easy for me to jump in and begin enjoying the fight. The hindrance, was not knowing the Japanese language. I can compare menus with the first game and can guess my way through some things. But things that deviate from the other game takes away from the experience. Under the circumstances, that can be expected. What is missed is some of the RPG elements, but as a fighter it shines, in single or two player mode. If you own the first game, menus seem similar, so with a little work and some writing, diagrams, drawings, hard thinking, you can make a lot of it work. Don't own the first game? English friendly? I think you can hit and miss guessing your way through the menus and be fighting in no time at all.

If you have an N64 and love the genre, I highly recommend this game.

The game got very mixed reviews back then, bad to mediocre. I really don't understand why. It was reviewed as a Mortal Kombat ripoff. But it was so different with a unique twist of its own. This game is so easy to pick up and play. Mortal Kombat takes time to develop skills. I have had hours of fun with this game. And I keep going back to it.

I have a fellow worker, who, after experiencing the next generation of consoles, can never go back. Right now he is into the PS4 and cannot go back to the PS3. Older games just don't do it for him anymore. He loves the realism in the graphics.
Has graphics effected your choice in gaming? Has it changed your perspective? Your taste in the kind of games you play? Or do you enjoy gaming for the gameplay alone?

I feel Graphics become more of an ingredient in a game adding to the experience. Complementing the game itself and therefore can be totally different depending on the subject matter.

But I have found myself preferring more realistic graphics in a racing game. I can still play the Lotus games for the Genesis. I have followed the Ridge Racer games since the PS1 days, love the N64 version. I really played outrun 2006 coast to coast psp to death. Need to get that out again. And I enjoy burnout paradise, or any of the burnout games. When I am in the mood, I find myself gravitating and spending more time with the games containing lush realistic graphics. 

I love this game and find it hard to put down, yes, addicting. This game is very easy to pick up and play. After two afternoons of playing I found myself easily pulling off 4 hit combos. And you'll need to be able to perform those combos in order to get anywhere in this game. The computer offers a good challenge, so it is essential that you learn to dodge, evade, and do combos. You can't just mash one button and walk through this. There are also countermeasures, special moves, fatalities, and throws to learn. I found the controls tight & responsive which always adds to the fun of any fighter.

Graphics are very good and exceptional for an N64 fighter. For the time period, and Generation, they were some of the best visuals out there. Detailed character designs are very appealing. They really have that "3D feel" about them. The environments, like every other fighter, are built around the individual characters. And each stage is huge, detailed, and has its dangers to avoid while fighting. Some fights, we were all over the place, others I had them backed into a corner. There are 12 fighters to choose from with hidden characters to unlock. Love the good ole days of unlocking instead of dancing with the "down loadable content" devil. You have the option, if you so choose, to turn off the blood and fatalities. I, personally, find the game well balanced, with each fighter having their own strengths and weaknesses. Some fighters have a longer reach, for example, causing you to use strategy. Again there is that motivation to continue learning, building your skills, and experience, in order to advance in the game. I find it a joy as I learn and begin to master some of the fighters. I find myself wanting an arcade stick and buttons.


I think any novice, like me, or skilled gamer, will find this one hard to put down. It is a good game that is fun to get into with lots of depth. Mace is an arcade to home port. The game was released by Midway, the same people that gave us Mortal Kombat. Not to say that has any bearing on whether this game is bad or good. The atmosphere here brings to mind Soul Blade. My feelings are that I like this game better than any of the Mortal Kombat games(not a fan) and find the elements more interesting. And I think it deserved a sequel on the N64 that it never got. That is our misfortune. I love arcade gaming and that is what this game is all about. I put this game in the top ten of my list of fighters on the N64. It is a very good weapons based fighter. And I recommend it to any one who loves a good arcade fighter. Just prepare to spend some time with this one. That is the only way you'll get the full pleasurable experience of Mace.
