P-47 II MD:
P-47 II MD is an aftermarket Sega Mega Drive game, developed and published by City Connection in Japan. It is an enhanced version of the Jaleco arcade game called P-47: The Freedom Fighter and is built upon the unreleased The Freedom Star game for the console. 35 years after its intended release date, not knowing if it was ever planned to be released in the US, I now have it in my hands. Another Sega Genesis game released in 2025.

My version is the collector's edition with an included music CD from the game. The collector's editions are numbered. If the number is correct then only 3775 were distributed? More people probably opted for the cartridge only. Cartridge is awesome with the smoke gray transparent shell and a gold plane printed on the red PC board. Even has an included full color manual.

Graphics are a simple example of that generation in gaming. A mixture of 1943 and Super E.D.F. Earth Defense Force comes to mind. 1943 graphics with E.D.F. gameplay. UN Squadron does come to mind on the SNES. The game could also be compared to Silkworm on the NES. Early 16 bit that was just a step up from 8 bit on the Genesis should give you an idea. Has a good use of parallax scrolling that gives you a good feel of depth in some of the stages..

Gameplay is side scrolling, enemies coming at you shooting, some from behind, some from below, constant bullets, missiles, standard for that generation of shmups. Nothing special or out of the ordinary, only what you expect to see, if you have played something like Silkworm or UN Squadon. Plenty of action that was common and easy negotiating by constantly dodging the patterns. You get power ups, but you better be quick. Some of them scroll across the screen to give a feeling of movement in conjunction with the parallax scrolling in the background. If you get hit, you lose everything. Bosses are big in comparison to the other enemies.

The game has that arcade influence and feel. But there was no achievement list where you enter your name beside your score. I really miss those things when you are spending a little time with a game, you like to compare yourself with your previous score. Or if you are taking turns with someone you get to brag and show off. This game is a fun ride even though I can blow through it rather quickly.
