I was thinking about this in the Pairing Collection thread... What a crazy invention the 3DS was.  I know the 3DS 3D effects caused headaches for some players and others could not perceive the 3D effects.  Even I limited my exposure to the 3D effects... just wasn't sure about it.

The Nintendo DS (Dual Screen) was cool... but then a 3DS (3D Dual Screen) that presented itself with the capability to show you 3D games without glasses or any other devices... that's pretty cool.

My 1st exposure to the 3DS was Zelda: The Ocarina of Time.  I bought the 3DS bundle with Ocarina of Time (OOT, remember that old acronym?) badged system.   Speaking of badged systems... I miss those old themed systems.  You just don't see that anymore... or at least it's been awhile Switch wise (all other consoles don't seem to do it).  Back on point, it was a bit mind blowing to see this... in 2011 too.   ;D

Honestly, I didn't use the feature that much... it just felt a little funky while using the 3D (eyes/head)... but it was awesome at the same time that they achieved this.  What experiences did you have?  Try to come up with the positives as well as negatives.

Thoughts? comments... post it up!

The 3DS uses a lenticular tech to produce the 3D image. A very clever way of producing the effect if you want to use it for gaming. It gets rid of the burdensome need for the special glasses. I thought the added slide adjustment for the intensity of the 3D effect was genius on Nintendo's part. It gave control to the gamer whether they wanted it off or on, and just how much you wanted it.

I never used the 3D except occasionally out of curiosity for certain games, like racing games. To me personally it was just a gimmick. There are some games I may have played for a session, but it was never required for any certain game for my own personal gaming experience. It was a more powerful console for gaming that sold me.

I really have strong feelings toward the DS and 3DS line of consoles being the golden years for modern Nintendo gaming. To me, this is my opinion, the Switch is a very lousy successor to the 3DS. It has been a step back. Actually I do not see it as a successor to the 3DS. It is more of a successor to the Wii U. And I personally see the Nintendo line of portables as a thing of the past. It really ended with the 3DS. The Switch Lite is a failed attempt to fill that void, but I don't think they are committed to that console. I really loved the clam shell design of the DS line of consoles.

These are my 3DS consoles in the picture. And I am glad I got them when I did, because the price of the 3DS has skyrocketed to being close to the price of a Switch. Insane!!

And I also have a 2DS, not pictured for obvious reasons. It is a 3DS without the 3D.

The 3D effect was cool on Mario Kart 7, the Metroid II remake, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and Majora's Mask. I still think that the touch screen was shoehorned into some games (Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow in particular), which made some challenges to porting the game to other systems (Like the Castlevania DS collection).

@Grindspine --> It definitely was cool on Mario Kart 7 (I have a lot of fondness for this 3DS Mario Kart), Metroid 2, OOT and MM.  Animal Crossing had some neat aspects to this as well.

@retro junkie those are awesome 3DS consoles.  I have the Blue one as well.  I believe that was Gamestop exclusive?  Maybe not... but I remember going in to Gamestop and picking up another 3DS lol. I'll post up a picture of my 3DS (not XL) Zelda that came with Ocarina of Time.

The 3DS was an awesome platform... I have the same "strong feelings" for the 3DS.  I had a lot of good times ... especially multiplayer with my son.  When I would drop him off at school... we would play Mario Kart DS (and I believe 7) here and there just having fun before he went into school.  We played Animal Crossing New Leaf a lot... amongst other games.  I had the pleasure of being able to play 1 awesome night of Zelda Triforce heroes with my Son and 1 other random person that was trying to play online... It was one in a many chance that occurred because so many people weren't playing anymore.

Why did you like the system so much?  Same for you Grind?

First and foremost, I like the clamshell design of the console itself. To me, that is portable gaming. I feel the same way about the GB SP. I wear cargo pants a lot. That design easily goes into the pocket with ease. I know the switch has a touch screen, but it might as well not have one at all. also I find it not as sensitive as the 3DS screen. It is not utilized at all, at least it is not used in the games that I have for the console. I know that it is a gimmick that was poorly used in a lot of the early games, DS, but there are certain games that it worked very well in the gameplay.
I also like the increased processing power that showed in a lot of its games. The 3DS seem to be the next step in gaming especially the "NEW" 3DS that really was not taken advantage of during its short life. There are just a lot of good gaming in its library that I really enjoy.

edit: and I really got into the fact that I could pull it out and take a 3D picture wherever I went. Love the camera feature on these things. Yeah I know it was poor quality, but it was still a thing.
