Title: Backlash to PlayStation’s physical-disc phaseout intensifies
Post by: BLUEVOODU on September 09, 2026, 05:01:49 PM
This Tom's Hardware title is pretty telling --> Sony threatens to cut off customer support and pursue legal action over harassment as backlash to PlayStation's physical-disc phaseout intensifies — company to move forward with no disc decision despite several lawsuits.

It sounds like things are getting a bit crazy in Japan.  Sony is implementing a new Customer Harassment policy.  There are class action lawsuits in progress amongst other things.  Per the article:
QuoteSeveral other related lawsuits are ongoing. Regardless, Sony has said it will "cautiously move forward" with its decision despite "strong views" from players.

Sony post on CDG that deal with this topic:

I can't blame people for reacting...  though it needs to be done in a safe manner.  However, pretty interesting that people are revolting... it makes me wonder if the stats in another video posted by @retro junkie on this site are correct in terms of only 20-30% being physical sales.  @targetrasp was a bit surprised by that as well.  I don't feel the reaction would be as great unless that 20-30% care DEEPLY on this topic.  Maybe that's not a correct take.

Thoughts, Comments... Post it up!

I believe they're playing fast and loose with the numbers. Sure, if you count every dlc, every homebrew / micro publisher's game someone picked up for a few bucks in the store that don't get any sort of digital distribution - sure. I'm sure there's 10 plus of those types of games to every 1 physical release.

@BLUEVOODU
20-30% I am sure there is a bit of manipulation of those numbers. How many of those numbers include digital only games? They could even be including DLC in those numbers? For the numbers to be accurate the only digital games that should be counted would be those that are hard copy and digital, plus the hard copy only. But that does not serve SONY's narrative. The numbers need to be presented by an independent party.

Just the reaction of SONY to the boycott and resistance shows that they are not exactly innocent, nor honest. Legal action against their own customers? What would be the outcome of that? That we would be forced to purchase their next digital console?
Just speculation in my own observation................
