Personally, if I were to get an alternative, I would still want it to run SteamOS and not Windows. I'm glad there are more of them coming to market and Valve working to make it compatible with other handhelds.

It's all a compromise though. Those alternatives might have better specs, but battery might be worse, or they run Windows, or they're so big they probably shouldn't be described as a handheld. It's nice that there's more choice though.

This is pretty cool!  I wondered if this was going to happen.

The Virtual Boy is being added to Nintendo Online for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2!  This is coming February 17, 2026.

This will be cool and will be an accessible way to enjoy Virtual Boy ... although, if you haven't tried the Virtual Boy on an actual system, you are missing a bit lol.  It was a unique experience.

However, you CAN add a Virtual Buy Accessory for $100 - yes...  a Virtual Boy Accessory which is a replica of the old Hardware!

Or you can do cardboard mode which is literal cardboard accessory that fits over your console and you view through it to your screen:

Personally, I'd want to skip cardboard mode and do the full accessory. Maybe the cardboard accessory would work well... I just don't see it translating well...?

What would be cool is if they added new games!  I'm not holding my breath for that... but how cool would that be?

I'm pumped for this.  What about you?  Thought, comments... post it up!

IT's been a long time... bumping this up.

@targetrasp --> That 3D All-Stars has sure jumped in price LOL  :great:

I ended up purchasing a few Shmups lately for the Switch --> Syder Reloaded, Shmup Collection and Raystorm x Raycrisis HD collection

I've been on a bit of a Shmup kick lately!  If you're getting on a Shmup kick, you should check those titles out.  Links were embedded to their respective topics

Nintendo - Switch 2, Switch, 3DS, and Wii-U / Final Fantasy Tactics
Last post by BLUEVOODU - September 30, 2025, 09:25:41 AM
It looks like Final Fantasy Tactics has just been released for the Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series and playstation 5.  This game looks rather cool. It's been a LONG time since I tried the original and memories have faded a bit.  However, I remember it being an enjoyable experience back then.  This game is on my radar for the future... I am a sucker for tactics games like this.

Have you played Final Fantasy Tactics?  What are your best memories of this game?  Are you excited for the new version?  I figure @Mai Valentine, @targetrasp and @retro junkie might have something to say on this topic lol  :great:

:great:

LOL!  Feel the burn ... Did it hurt?  Honestly, it was near impossible to pick Wind Jammers.  I just remember all the fun my friends and I had playing that game.  We had a lot of fun playing the others... especially Metal Slug, but it was windjammers that seemed to get the most play.  ;D

@CreepinDeth - I think that's where I am at right now.  I had a conversation with @SpartanEvolved on this the other day.  I think I'm waiting for the Steam Deck 2 as well.  There are cool alternatives as pointed out by spartan... IE the Rog Ally.   However, I think I'm going to hold out for the Steam Deck 2.  My Deck 1 is doing alright.  It would be nice to be able to capitalize on the better battery life of the OLED

I'm going to wait. Thought about it a bit but at this point the Steam Deck is starting to struggle a little bit with newer titles (especially Unreal Engine 5 games.) I'll wait for Steam Deck 2.

However, if you don't own one, I would recommend it if you don't play the latest and greatest titles.

That's interesting.... Bust-A-Move arcade edition?  I would not have thought that.   @retro junkie you have to pick just 1 lol.

I think my most played was Samurai Shodown, Metal Slug, or maybe Windjammers.  Though I also could easily throw Fatal Fury Special in there as well!  It would be hard for me to choose between those 4.  I like each for different reasons.

SO ... I will narrow it down to Samurai Showdown OR Windjammers.  ???

And for the premise of this thread... narrow that down to...  ???

Windjammers  :great:   (it might actually be Samurai Showdown)

Quote from: CreepinDeth on September 24, 2025, 11:08:21 PMOver the decades Nintendo has been humbled just as often as they have been successful.

I agree with this. Honestly... though the game has changed a bit over the years.  Nintendo (and other companies) really have gone to cookie cutter.  You don't see attempts like the Virtual Boy anymore.  And why should companies?  It's a risk.  Now, they have to have winners. Period.  This has also killed a lot of creativity... that may or may not be successful.

His call out of WOW and Everquest is spot on... and patents like this potentially will cause genre rifts or they're going to have micro differences that will be recognized by the patent office as different enough.

These days, companies are finding value where they can.  They're protecting whatever moat they can protect.  So much is transferring to logical patents because there are vast opportunities in the logical space for patents.  You're going to see this more and more. The interesting kicker is how AI may smash through a lot of these barriers.

The patents, in my opinion, are too wide and vast.  However, it seems that the patent office has decided that's not the case.  I'm curious how it will all shake out.  I feel like this was a thing a year or two ago... did this just get approved?  The video posted was from 7 days ago.
