I don't really know when this became a thing. I do know that it started with the development of an emulator to play Gameboy games on an N64 everdrive. But somehow this went under my radar. I saw these cartridges pop up with what looked like Gameboy games for my N64. It got my attention and I just had to start picking them up for a try, I had to bite. The novelty of the whole concept is insane. But it has hooked me. This works. And it begs the question as to why Nintendo didn't do something like this when the N64 was their baby. The Pokemon games could have helped the console a lot. They could have taken those games and put a 3D coat of paint on them and passed them off as an addition to the 3D craziness that permeated the minds of gamers back then. What was on Gameboy could have sold on the N64.

I love the fact that someone had the idea to put a Gameboy game on a N64 cart and place the same label on the cart. Awesome!

While playing the game it comes to mind that these games would require a save feature to make them worth your time playing. So I tried to save like you normally would on a Gameboy. Hmmm....didn't work. So it came into my brain to push buttons. Ah-ha! The "C" buttons revealed a menu and other things. The left "C" button opens a menu. The menu opened up a choice of an aspect ratio. It is enough to sit and play this game on a big screen when it is meant for a tiny screen on a Gameboy, but seriously, who would want to stretch this across their flatscreen tv. You also have an option for a smooth or sharp image. Smooth works for me, takes out some of the blockiness. If you are playing an old B&W Gameboy game there is an option to fiddle with the color pallet. The Six Golden Coin game, I adjusted the color pallet to the greenish screen of the old first Gameboy, woot.
The down "C" button saves the game to the cart. The up "C" button loads the game save from the cart. Only one save, that you can easily save over, if you hit that button. The Pokemon games were a bit problematic when I first booted the game. My first save, when loading, was met with an error. Reinserting the game cart and trying again was met with success. I am not sure if this is going to be a problem, but it has created a bit of skepticism in my mind. I am going to need to put some hours into the game just to ride this out and see if it is a failed attempt.
The right "C" button is a fast run for your character. Not sure how that works in your gameplay.

What they did here was to place the Gameboy emulator on a cartridge and one game. It is fixed with no way to add to it that I am aware. If the save feature clears up and the load error does not rear its ugly head again, then this could be an enjoyable way to play the games. The N64 controller works well for gameplay, directional and the "A" and "B" buttons. I will probably pick up every game that is released this way to add to my N64 game library. I like this sort of weird stuff. Makes my day.
