I have played that first Mario game maybe once or twice and it wasn't at an arcade. I had a family before I got into my first Mario game which was Super Mario World. That was the good ole days when they gave a pack-in. My first game console was the Sega Genesis. The Commodore 64 don't count.

I have a slightly different experience at the arcades than, I think, everybody on this forum.  :))

I remember pinball machines lined up. There was the pitch the ball into the basket, pitch the ball into the hole sort of stuff.

And I remember the driving game. It seems that it was sort-of like pole position. The screen was lit up by a light bulb in the back. You had a steering wheel to control your car, which you could see the shadow of the stick that the car was attached to. You had a pedal for the speed. You simply had the movement of left to right. Cars would pass by in a definite pattern. When you hit a car, there was this violent heavy bump, intense vibration, you could feel in the steering wheel. Something actually hit something inside that stand-up. Enough to make it feel like you actually hit something. It was all mechanical. On screen you could see the projection of ground, road, and other cars moving that gave you a "feel" that you were going forward.

I remember the time it got a video game, it was pong. You could not play it by yourself, you needed someone like a friend or some stranger that was there in the arcade.

Pinball dominated before the era of the video game cabinets. I saw the change. By the time that video game cabinets became the dominating force, I had a job and was living in my apartment, still single. Shmups was first before the fighters in my local arcade.

General Discussion / 40 years of Super Mario Bros
Last post by BLUEVOODU - Today at 08:29:11 AM
2025 marks 40 years of Super Mario Bros.   Holy crap. Where did the time go?

I don't know about many others, but I had the pleasure of playing Super Mario Bros for the 1st time in the arcade. I post up on this in the What was your 1st Arcade Experience? topic in Arcade

The following Mario website is really hammering into the 40 years of SMB:
https://mario.nintendo.com/

There also a Super Mario Galaxy movie coming April 2026 - this is in collaboration with Illumination. Im a fan of several Illumination movies.

What are your best Super Mario Bros memories and stories?

Post it up!

Personally, if I were to get an alternative, I would still want it to run SteamOS and not Windows. I'm glad there are more of them coming to market and Valve working to make it compatible with other handhelds.

It's all a compromise though. Those alternatives might have better specs, but battery might be worse, or they run Windows, or they're so big they probably shouldn't be described as a handheld. It's nice that there's more choice though.

This is pretty cool!  I wondered if this was going to happen.

The Virtual Boy is being added to Nintendo Online for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2!  This is coming February 17, 2026.

This will be cool and will be an accessible way to enjoy Virtual Boy ... although, if you haven't tried the Virtual Boy on an actual system, you are missing a bit lol.  It was a unique experience.

However, you CAN add a Virtual Buy Accessory for $100 - yes...  a Virtual Boy Accessory which is a replica of the old Hardware!

Or you can do cardboard mode which is literal cardboard accessory that fits over your console and you view through it to your screen:

Personally, I'd want to skip cardboard mode and do the full accessory. Maybe the cardboard accessory would work well... I just don't see it translating well...?

What would be cool is if they added new games!  I'm not holding my breath for that... but how cool would that be?

I'm pumped for this.  What about you?  Thought, comments... post it up!

IT's been a long time... bumping this up.

@targetrasp --> That 3D All-Stars has sure jumped in price LOL  :great:

I ended up purchasing a few Shmups lately for the Switch --> Syder Reloaded, Shmup Collection and Raystorm x Raycrisis HD collection

I've been on a bit of a Shmup kick lately!  If you're getting on a Shmup kick, you should check those titles out.  Links were embedded to their respective topics

Nintendo - Switch 2, Switch, 3DS, and Wii-U / Final Fantasy Tactics
Last post by BLUEVOODU - September 30, 2025, 09:25:41 AM
It looks like Final Fantasy Tactics has just been released for the Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series and playstation 5.  This game looks rather cool. It's been a LONG time since I tried the original and memories have faded a bit.  However, I remember it being an enjoyable experience back then.  This game is on my radar for the future... I am a sucker for tactics games like this.

Have you played Final Fantasy Tactics?  What are your best memories of this game?  Are you excited for the new version?  I figure @Mai Valentine, @targetrasp and @retro junkie might have something to say on this topic lol  :great:

LOL!  Feel the burn ... Did it hurt?  Honestly, it was near impossible to pick Wind Jammers.  I just remember all the fun my friends and I had playing that game.  We had a lot of fun playing the others... especially Metal Slug, but it was windjammers that seemed to get the most play.  ;D

@CreepinDeth - I think that's where I am at right now.  I had a conversation with @SpartanEvolved on this the other day.  I think I'm waiting for the Steam Deck 2 as well.  There are cool alternatives as pointed out by spartan... IE the Rog Ally.   However, I think I'm going to hold out for the Steam Deck 2.  My Deck 1 is doing alright.  It would be nice to be able to capitalize on the better battery life of the OLED
